A man is in critical condition after taking herbal medicine to treat acute kidney failure.

A man with a history of stage 4 kidney failure took herbal medicine to treat himself, causing his condition to become severe and critical.

On September 5, Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital announced that the hospital had just saved the life of a patient with acute kidney failure who had taken herbal medicine to treat himself, leading to a critical condition.

Previously, patient CTV (male, 42 years old, residing in Soc Trang province) was hospitalized with symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, indigestion, and swelling.

After 2 days of treatment, the patient's condition was stable, vital signs were stable.

The family said that Mr. V. had a history of stage 4 kidney failure and high blood pressure and had to take regular medication. A week before being hospitalized, an acquaintance introduced him to a folk remedy that was effective in treating kidney failure. The main ingredients included Eclipta prostrata and many unknown medicinal leaves. After taking the medicine, Mr. V.'s condition worsened, so his family took him to Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital.

Through examination and paraclinical testing: Test results: Hb 6.6 g/dL (normal index 14.5 g/dL); Blood creatinine 9.4 mg/dL (normal index 0.7-1.2 mg/dL); Blood urea 188 mg/dL (normal index 10.2-49.8 mg/dL). The patient was diagnosed with acute chronic renal failure, severe chronic anemia, and hypertension.

Immediately, the team performed emergency treatment, blood transfusion, and used supportive and kidney-protective drugs to save the patient in critical condition. After 2 days of treatment, the patient's health stabilized.

BSCK2 Nguyen Thi Mai Lan, Head of the hospital's Nephrology Department, said that the arbitrary use of herbal medicine instead of treating the disease according to the regimen and instructions of the doctor has caused many cases of kidney failure to progress severely, requiring emergency treatment. Doctor Lan recommends that before using any medicine, patients should consult a doctor, not arbitrarily use folk methods for treatment, especially in cases with underlying diseases.
