On April 8, German Federal Minister of Economy Robert Habeck said that Berlin wants to prevent such practices, learning from Denmark's model.
German authorities must take stricter action against companies in Germany that evade EU sanctions to do business with Russia through third countries, Minister Habeck said. He stressed that this issue must be addressed more strongly and decisively.
Since Russia began its military campaign in neighboring Ukraine more than 13 months ago, the EU has introduced 10 sets of sanctions against Moscow, including trade restrictions.
Germany could learn from Denmark, for example, in better combating illegal sanctions circumvention, Habeck said.
According to him, Danish customs analyzes trade flows and customs data very carefully to find anomalies.
"If such things happen, for example, a certain amount of goods that previously went to Russia are suddenly transferred to another third country in roughly the same quantity, then that is a reason for closer examination," the German minister said.
Danish customs will then ask the businesses. According to him, the German Foreign Trade Act also requires this information and similar inspection rights.
In late February, the German Economy Ministry proposed concrete steps to better combat sanctions evasion. According to Habeck, Berlin is currently discussing the issue within the federal government and with its EU partners.
