Portugal wants to appoint Mourinho

CNN and Goal confirmed that Mourinho is the number one candidate to replace Roberto Martínez to lead the Portuguese national team, preparing for the 2026 World Cup campaign. The Federation is also willing to pay compensation to Fenerbahçe to welcome Mourinho soon. The final decision will depend on the team's results in the upcoming UEFA Nations League semi-finals.

Mourinho has repeatedly expressed his desire to coach the Portuguese national team. He has called coaching the national team "a dream" since 2007 and expressed his hope to do so before retiring.

Roberto Martinez is still doing well with Portugal. He recently became the fastest coach in the country’s history to reach 20 wins. However, the Portuguese Football Federation still wants to increase the chances of success at the World Cup by inviting Mourinho.

The 'Special One' has had an illustrious career, winning major honours including the Champions League and national championships in various countries. Mourinho is currently working in Türkiye for Fenerbahce. Accepting the job of managing the Portuguese national team would be a major turning point in his career.

If Mourinho becomes the national team coach, he will face many challenges, including building a cohesive and strong team. The Portuguese team has many stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias and Diogo Costa, but has had a poor performance in recent World Cups. Mourinho's task is to develop the potential of the stars to compete for the World Cup title.
