Gần 850.000 thí sinh đã đăng ký hơn 7,6 triệu nguyện vọng xét tuyển đại học - cao nhất trong 5 năm trở lại đây.
Nearly 850,000 candidates have registered more than 7.6 million university admission wishes - the highest in the past 5 years.

This year, nearly 850,000 candidates registered for more than 7.6 million admission wishes - the highest number in the past 5 years. The sudden increase in wishes and changes in admission regulations have made many candidates nervous and worried.

Many opinions expressed the hope that the Ministry of Education and Training would soon have a solution to help reduce the stress of enrollment.

Expected benchmarks to fluctuate widely

The 2025 university entrance exam recorded a significant increase in both the number of candidates registering and the number of registered wishes.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, nearly 850,000 candidates have registered for admission, with a total of about 7.6 million applications, with each student registering for an average of nearly 9 applications, much higher than the average of about 5 applications in the past three years.

Representatives of universities said that the abolition of early admissions has left candidates without a starting point, leading to the mentality of “the more you register, the safer it is”. This is one of the main reasons for the sharp increase in the number of applications.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien, Vice President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said: The lack of early admission helps increase fairness and reduce virtual admissions, but also forces candidates to register multiple wishes to protect their chances of admission. On average, this year each candidate registered nearly 9 wishes, which is completely understandable.

This year, the number of candidates applying to a number of major universities has also increased sharply. The National Economics University recorded a total increase of about 25% compared to 2024.

At the Banking Academy, according to Dr. Tran Manh Ha, Head of Training Department, the number of candidates increased by 126%, of which up to 1/3 of the candidates possess international certificates.

Similarly, the University of Commerce recorded a 1.5-fold increase in the number of applications compared to the previous year. According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Trung, Deputy Head of the school’s Communications and Admissions Department, more than 30,000 candidates with foreign language certificates have registered to study at the school.

Previously, based on the high school graduation exam score distribution, the school predicted that the benchmark score might decrease slightly, but with the sudden increase in the number of applications, it is predicted that the benchmark score might be higher than originally expected and might be more spread out than in previous years.

Spreading Many Wishes - Opportunity or Pressure?

The general admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training is in the virtual filtering phase, with a total of 6 virtual filtering times, and will give the final admission results by the afternoon of August 20.

The deadline for announcing the first round of university admission scores in 2025 is before 5:00 p.m. on August 22.

After 5:00 p.m. on August 20, universities will be allowed to announce the first round of benchmark scores. The deadline for announcing the first round of benchmark scores in 2025 is before 5:00 p.m. on August 22.

At this time, many schools have announced that they will announce their results in the afternoon or evening of August 20, such as: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University, etc.

The early announcement of benchmark scores will help candidates be more proactive in confirming their admission. According to regulations, after receiving the results, candidates must confirm their admission online before 5:00 p.m. on August 30. Those who do not complete this step within the prescribed time will be considered as refusing admission.

Before the announcement of the benchmark scores, not only candidates but also many parents were anxiously waiting for the results after a long time of studying and participating in the admission process. Many students registered from dozens to hundreds of wishes because they were worried about failing the university entrance exam.

Nguyen Minh Khoi, a 12th grader at a high school in Hanoi, shared: “I registered more than 30 wishes, because I really wasn’t sure if I would pass the desired major. I was looking forward to August 20th to know the results, because I have been very worried and had trouble sleeping for the past few days.”

Ms. Vu Thi Hoa, a parent of a student at Tien Thinh High School, said: “We hope that the authorities will take measures to make university admissions easier. I know that this year, there are candidates who have registered more than 100 wishes. There needs to be a solution so that candidates do not have to register so many wishes. The chances of being admitted are not clear, but this method is both costly and stressful, especially when waiting for the announcement of the admission scores.”

After the first round of standard scores is announced, schools will conduct additional admissions from September 1 until the end of December 2025. However, according to experts, the additional admission conditions will not be easy, the admission scores may be equal to or higher than the first round. Candidates need to consider carefully before waiting for the additional round, especially when they have been admitted to the appropriate major in the first round.

Currently, some schools have announced the expected benchmark scores for candidates to refer to. Hanoi University of Science and Technology announced the expected benchmark scores from 19 to 27.8 points depending on the major. The Academy of Finance predicts that the scores will range from 21 to 27 points, while the Academy of Journalism and Communication predicts that the benchmark scores will be stable or decrease slightly in some groups...

In fact, eliminating early admission has helped reduce the situation of virtual admissions, creating fairness between admission methods. However, this also puts a psychological burden on candidates and parents when they have to "spread" too many wishes to ensure opportunities.

Many experts, students and parents expect the Ministry of Education and Training to continue to improve the regulations, so as to maintain fairness and transparency while reducing pressure.

Proposals such as limiting the number of applications, having an effective centralized consulting mechanism, or optimizing the virtual filtering process, are absolutely necessary to improve the quality of admission and ensure the rights of candidates.
