Trade cooperation between Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has witnessed impressive growth in recent times, notably in the export of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables to this market. With the momentum from the milestone of the two countries upgrading their relationship to Comprehensive Partnership exactly one year ago, it is expected that Vietnamese fruits and vegetables will increasingly affirm their position in this very potential market.
Farzana is one of the leading companies in purchasing, trading, and distributing fresh fruits and vegetables in the UAE and the Middle East region. More than 10 years ago, it was one of the first companies in the UAE to import fruits and vegetables from Vietnam. Last year, the company imported about 200 containers, from seedless lemons, dragon fruits, coconuts, watermelons, bananas... This year, the amount of fruits and vegetables imported from Vietnam is expected to double.
Mr. Fahad Sayar - Head of Fresh Agricultural Products, Farzana Company, UAE said: "In fact, Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are currently very competitive in the UAE market. In particular, in recent years, we have seen that goods from Vietnam are expanding to more product groups. However, the limitation of Vietnamese goods, or we can say the main challenge, lies in maintaining stability - both in terms of quality standards and supply output".
Last year, fruit and vegetable exports to the UAE established a new growth momentum, reaching nearly 80 million USD, an increase of nearly 34% compared to the previous year, making the UAE the 9th largest market for fruit and vegetable imports from Vietnam.
Vietnamese fruits such as seedless lemons, dragon fruits, coconuts, etc. have become very familiar in the Middle East, but to truly capture this potential market, there is still a lot of work to be done.
Mr. Truong Xuan Trug - First Secretary, Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the UAE said: "There is a phenomenon of uneven quality between shipments, there is unhealthy competition between Vietnamese exporters to the UAE, especially small businesses sometimes offer too low prices, causing the value of Vietnamese goods to decrease. Vietnamese businesses must also pay more attention to market information, business culture, as well as Muslim culture. The most important thing now is the skills and capacity to negotiate contracts."
The UAE market has huge potential for agricultural and aquatic products, including Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. Moreover, if the door to a large and demanding market like the UAE can be opened, it will also be an opportunity for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables to reach the very attractive market of the Gulf countries.
