Ukraine gets hit by its own stick in Kurakhove

Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương14/11/2024

Russia-Ukraine war today, November 14, 2024: Ukraine was 'hit by its own stick' in Kurakhove when it tried to destroy the dam on the Volchaya River to cause flooding.

Units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were swept away by floods from several areas in Kurakhove, Donetsk after the Kurakhovsky dam was destroyed.

“They flooded their own positions. Everything in the lowlands and underground is under water,” Russia’s TASS news agency reported.

The explosion of the Kurakhovskoe reservoir dam was recorded by a reconnaissance UAV. The footage shows the partial explosion of the dam on the Volchaya River as well as the aftermath of the explosion. Currently, the Russian side cannot explain the above action of the AFU because the main impact of the dam destruction severely affected the defensive positions of the Ukrainian side and did not stop the advance of the Russian army.

AFU has abandoned Kurakhove

Readovka channel reported that the Russian army has taken control of the eastern part of Kurakhove and the AFU defense forces are preparing to withdraw from the city.

Specifically, the Ukrainian side has begun to withdraw from the Kurakhove encirclement and is on the brink of collapse in the Dalnie settlement. However, the possibility of a safe withdrawal of the AFU is very low as the Russian encirclement is tightening.

The AFU is trying to save the 79th Separate Airborne Brigade, which is withdrawing part of its defensive position and retreating towards Dachnoye. This unit is almost "exposed" to Russian UAV and artillery fire.

At the same time, the Russian side is developing a faster offensive south of the city to put pressure on the enemy troops. All the troops west of Kurakhove may be pushed to the banks of the Volchya River.

Most likely, Ukraine, having no room to maneuver, will begin a retreat to the west. Despite the fact that the defenses at Kurakhove are well-built, the Russian hold on the garrison and the immediate threat of cutting off logistics along the N-15 highway from Zaporizhia essentially render this defensive position worthless.

The AFU had no choice but to leave its well-established positions to hold the remaining combat units. Everything would be used and with the assurance that the rear would not be attacked by the Russians.

The AFU’s preparations to leave Kurakhove and make a massive retreat westward have been indirectly confirmed. The Financial Times quoted a Ukrainian military official as saying that the garrison was ready to withdraw from the city and was just waiting for orders to do so.

Rybar channel confirmed that the Russian side continued to gain control of Ilyinka, fighting continued in Dalnie and 2 Leopard 2A4 tanks of the AFU were disabled south of Kurakhove.

Velyka Novosilka is the next target

The Russian army continues to advance south of Donetsk, as it recaptures the village of Rivnopil, the Military Summary channel reports. Attacks in the direction of Velyka Novosilka are becoming more intense, meaning a new encirclement is being deployed around this important city.

Rybar channel reported that in the direction of Vremyvka, the Russian shock force is advancing from the direction of Shakhtarsk - Zolota Nyva towards Velyka Novosilka, as well as attacking Novodarivka and advancing deep into Rovnopillia.

South of Kurakhove, Russian troops continue to advance across the fields to expand their control. According to videos released by Kiev, the destruction of the reservoir dam has had serious consequences, with flooding reaching almost to Ulakly, blocking Ukraine's supply lines.

In Toretsk, Russian troops regained control of previously lost territory in the Sabalka district. The Russian side also stepped up attacks on the city center.

In the Kursk direction, the Russian army is increasing the intensity of its offensive and achieving success. The town of Plyokhove is under control and the Russians have also driven the AFU out of large areas along the forests in the north of the region. Russian reconnaissance units are approaching Sudzha. Also in the north, the Russian advance is determined along the fields and forests towards the village of Novaya Sorochyna.
