Ukraine gives reason for meeting with Mr. Zelensky

According to the Advisor to the Office of the President of Ukraine Mikhail Podolyak, the talks between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Chinese President Xi Jinping were planned, but did not take place as scheduled due to a number of difficulties.

"There are plans to hold talks. Organizationally, both the Presidential Office and the Foreign Ministry are involved in this - the head of the office Andrey Yermak and Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba are involved. We proactively proposed to hold talks," said Mikhail Podolyak.

However, the Ukrainian presidential office adviser said that "this is quite complicated". "The problem is that China has not yet decided whether it wants to resolve the problem between Russia and Ukraine or whether it will still cautiously stand aside", he said.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported on a conversation between Xi Jinping and Zelensky following the Chinese leader's three-day state visit to Moscow.

The US appreciates the possibility of direct talks between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Chinese President Xi Jinping. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Washington encouraged the Chinese leader to reach out to Kiev, saying “he should hear directly from Ukraine, not just Russia’s perspective” on the current conflict.

Meanwhile, last month, when asked about potential talks between Xi and Zelensky, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin noted that Beijing “ has maintained open communication with all relevant parties, including Ukraine,” and reiterated China’s commitment to resolving the crisis peacefully .
