On December 10, the Philippine government reaffirmed its commitment to comply with the terms and principles enshrined in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of the signing of the Convention.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) conveyed the country's message of support, emphasizing its "deep commitment" to the Convention, the Inquirer reported.
The statement stated: "The Philippines' commitment has been demonstrated through concrete actions. From being one of the first countries to sign and ratify the Convention to continuing to adjust its domestic legal framework in accordance with UNCLOS 1982 through the promulgation of the Baselines Act, the Maritime Zones Act and the Archipelagic Sea Routes Act."
The Philippines maintains that it maintains its legitimate claim to maritime rights, but continues to engage with its coastal neighbors through discussions on the delimitation of the exclusive economic zone, continental shelf, and extended continental shelf, measured from lawful baselines in areas where these maritime zones may overlap.
The DFA stated that UNCLOS 1982 remains the foundation of a peaceful and prosperous maritime region, affirming that the Philippines is proud of its contributions to the negotiation and promotion of the Convention.
Emphasizing adherence to the Convention’s dispute settlement mechanisms, the DFA noted: “Claims that exceed the geographic and substantive limits of maritime rights under UNCLOS 1982 are without legal effect. We continue to call for compliance with the 2016 Arbitral Award and we appreciate the growing recognition of the Award as an indisputable part of international law.”
