Currently, the 4ha off-season longan garden of Mr. Tran Van Xuyen, Phu Lam hamlet, Hoa Hiep commune, Xuyen Moc district is in the fruiting stage. Mr. Tran Van Xuyen said that off-season longan is usually processed to flower from the 11th and 12th lunar months and the important stage for the fruit to achieve quality and productivity is around March and April. This stage often falls in the hot season, so care must also be thorough, in which the most important is to have enough water for the tree to grow.

“I have invested in an automatic sprinkler irrigation system for the entire longan garden for several years now. With this irrigation system, I have reduced electricity costs and irrigation costs a lot. With 4 hectares of longan, if watering manually, it would take 10 hours, but using a sprinkler irrigation system, it would only take about 4 hours. Investing in an automatic sprinkler irrigation system also keeps the soil around the base moist, helping the longan trees to shed less flowers and produce stable fruit,” Mr. Tuyen added.

Seeing the effectiveness of installing an automatic sprinkler irrigation system, Mr. Truong Dinh Nam, also in Phu Lam hamlet, invested in this system to irrigate 1.7 hectares of longan. Thanks to the adequate water supply, especially in the dry season, the longan flowers bloom evenly and do not fall off.

“Just turn on the switch for about 30 minutes, the sprinkler irrigation system automatically meets the water needs of plants in the garden, much simpler and more convenient than the old way, and at the same time helps plants grow well,” said Mr. Nam.

Mr. Nguyen Phong Vu, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hoa Hiep Commune, said that the whole commune has more than 400 hectares of longan, mainly yellow rice boat and Thai Ido longan, concentrated in Phu Quy, Phu Son and Phu Lam hamlets. This area is often adversely affected by climate change. During the dry months, water sources stored in irrigation works and surface and underground water sources dry up. To minimize the impact of water shortages, farmers have promoted the application of advanced irrigation, saving water to help increase crop productivity.

According to calculations by longan growers, the application of advanced and economical irrigation systems has brought practical results to agricultural production, helping to increase crop productivity by 6-15% compared to traditional farming; at the same time, saving 30-50% of labor costs for irrigation and care, saving 30-40% of water compared to traditional irrigation methods. In particular, this is one of the effective applications in responding to drought, water shortage, and climate change.
