One origin

There was a very long time in history when Quang Nam and Da Nang shared the same administrative unit (Quang Nam governorate from 1471, to doanh, tran, and then Quang Nam province from 1832). During the French colonial period, a part of Quang Nam province's land was cut off to establish Da Nang city, belonging to Quang Nam province.

After 1975, Quang Nam province and Quang Da special zone merged into Quang Nam - Da Nang province. In 1997, this province was split into two separate administrative units directly under the central government.

Although Quang Nam and Da Nang are two administrative units (1997-2025), in terms of culture and history, they are one - one origin. Words and phrases such as: Quang region, Quang land, Quang people, Quang character, Quang accent, Quang scholar, Quang Nam often argues, Quang Nam land has not rained yet, Quang Nam loves... are used by both Quang Nam and Da Nang, not exclusively for Quang Nam.

During the 28 years of separation, Quang Nam province organized many cultural activities that were both broad and deep, especially activities to preserve, conserve, restore and promote the traditional cultural values ​​of Quang Nam.

Many scientific seminars and research works have been published in books and films. In particular, in 2010, Quang Nam and Da Nang jointly published the Quang Nam - Da Nang Geographical Book, a very large historical and cultural research work, with many valuable aspects for those who want to learn more about this land of scholars and talented people.

Cultural and historical researchers and the majority of people in Da Nang City welcome and highly appreciate the above-mentioned activities of Quang Nam Province, and consider them as doing them for themselves. In return, those working in cultural and historical fields in Da Nang also work hard to research and organize many cultural activities not only for themselves but also for Quang Nam.

For more than ten years, the Da Nang Historical Science Association has regularly published the Special Issue on Quang Nam History Research, and the Da Nang Publishing House (now temporarily closed) has continuously published valuable research works on the culture and history of Quang Nam...

Da Nang Tuong Theater but named after the famous Tuong composer from Quang Nam, Nguyen Hien Dinh, and regularly performs mainly for the people of Quang Nam. Da Nang Bookcase (at the General Library) but most of the books are about the culture, land and people of Quang Nam...

It is clear that during the 28 years of separation, Quang Nam and Da Nang were only separated in terms of administration, but in terms of culture, especially traditional culture, there was no clear, specific distinction.

Both localities are actively researching and working to preserve, conserve and promote the values ​​from a common root, which is Quang Nam culture. Therefore, we do not hesitate to say that the upcoming merger of Quang Nam province and Da Nang city, from a cultural perspective, has many advantages.

Things to do

In my humble opinion, when the culture, sports and tourism sectors of Da Nang and Quang Nam come under one roof, some issues need to be addressed.

First, it is necessary to harmoniously resolve the tasks of preserving cultural heritage and developing tourism.

When the two administrative units merge, the new Da Nang City will have a rich and diverse heritage system with 3 world cultural heritages (Hoi An urban area, My Son temple complex, Ma Nhai Ngu Hanh Son), 6 special national relics, more than 500 national and provincial relics.

This is an abundant resource for tourism development, which will certainly bring huge revenue to the state budget as well as the people.

The problem is that this cultural resource needs to be strictly managed, not to infringe upon or destroy cultural heritages in order to pursue tourism revenue. The tourism industry needs to be responsible for preserving and promoting the heritage values ​​in the area so that tourism development can be sustainable and long-term.

Second, effectively manage and use existing cultural institutions.

Over the past 28 years, Quang Nam has built many important and quite modern cultural works and institutions such as the Cultural Center, Radio - Television Station, General Library, Provincial Museum... When the administrative center moves to Da Nang, the purpose of using these institutions should not be transferred to other sectors, but can be turned into the second base of cultural institutions of the new Da Nang City, because the people's need for cultural enjoyment and creation is always rich and increasingly enhanced.

As for Hoi An City, if it cannot maintain a single administrative unit as it is now, it needs its own plan to preserve and promote the unique cultural values ​​that have created this world-famous brand. For a long time, Hoi An has been a unified, vibrant, tightly structured cultural entity. If cultural institutions are divided and activities are fragmented, the attractiveness of Hoi An will be significantly reduced.

Third, it is necessary to continue research and communication programs on culture.

Currently, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Newspapers and Radio and Television Stations, the Literature and Arts Association of Quang Nam Province and Da Nang City are having practical and effective projects, programs and plans for cultural, artistic and publishing activities...

When coming together, these projects and programs need to be researched, inherited and promoted, such as documentary series about the land and people of Quang Nam, radio and television playgrounds for students, Quang Nam Culture monthly magazine, research works on history, culture and famous people of Quang Nam.

Once merged, for administrative and foreign affairs activities, the name Da Nang will of course be used, but for cultural, artistic, historical and traditional publications, it is not necessary to do so. Should we still use the names Xu Quang, Dat Quang to contribute to preserving traditions, preserving memories, and the soul of a land, such as Dat Quang magazine (Literature and Arts Association), Quang Land Culture monthly (Newspaper and Radio and Television Station), Quang Land Historical Research special issue (Historical Science Association)...

Merging many provinces and cities across the country, including Quang Nam province and Da Nang city, is a major policy of the Party and the State. This certainly will not be without some initial difficulties and problems.

However, it can be said that the difficulties and obstacles are not big, if not to say that there are also many advantages, because they have a common history of development and a cultural origin. The problem is that the new Da Nang City needs to build a team of cultural workers who are worthy, have qualities, qualifications, abilities, enthusiasm, and "fire" to bring culture to continuous development, worthy of the people's expectations.
