According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration and the Vietnam Inland Waterways Administration ( Ministry of Construction ), this increase reflects the recovery of import-export activities and domestic trade after a period of stagnation.
Specifically, container cargo alone reached 10.52 million TEUs, up 11% over the same period. Of which, exports and imports both increased by 14%, reaching 3.29 million TEUs and 3.4 million TEUs, respectively; domestic cargo reached 3.82 million TEUs, up 6%.
Regarding the structure of goods, exports reached 71 million tons, up 3%; imports reached 95.3 million tons, up 9%; domestic goods increased the most with 202.9 million tons, equivalent to 14%. Transit goods loaded and unloaded at ports reached 1.44 million tons.
Major seaports lead growth
Statistics show that major seaports continue to play a leading role in the national logistics chain. Specifically, the volume of goods through Ho Chi Minh City ports increased by 12.96%, Vung Tau increased by 9%, Hai Phong increased by 5.5%. Container cargo in these areas increased accordingly: Ho Chi Minh City increased by 9.22%, Vung Tau increased by 15%, Hai Phong increased by 9.77%.
Some other localities also recorded impressive growth such as Quang Ngai (33.6%), Can Tho (25%), Dong Nai (19%), Nghe An (15%), Binh Thuan (11%), Da Nang (7.25%). However, there were still areas with decreased output such as Thua Thien Hue, An Giang , Ha Tinh, Thai Binh, especially Da Nang with a decrease of 5.9%.
In the inland waterway port system, Region I (mainly the North) recorded a 33% increase in cargo volume, reaching nearly 32 million tons, of which container cargo increased by 16%. Region VI (South) and Region II also achieved an increase of nearly 10%. Notably, Region VI had a container throughput increase of up to 46%.
In contrast, region III (Central region) saw a sharp decrease in both total cargo volume and container cargo, by 8% and 78% respectively, showing that transportation demand has not recovered in this region.
By the end of April 2025, there were more than 17,000 foreign ships passing through the seaport system, an increase of 7%. Domestic ships reached nearly 19,800, an increase of 17%. Notably, ships running domestic routes increased dramatically by 21%, reaching 17,677, while the number of ships entering and exiting the country decreased slightly by 4%, to 2,088.
Inland waterway transport also recorded positive growth. The total number of watercraft passing through the port system reached 229,750. Of which, VR-SB registered vessels - the mainstay of coastal transport routes - reached nearly 69,000. The volume of goods transported by VR-SB alone reached 37 million tons, up 15% over the same period.
The management agency estimated that in the first 5 months of the year, the total volume of goods passing through the port system reached 464 million tons, up 13% over the same period. Of which, domestic goods continued to be the main driving force with an increase of 21%, reaching nearly 254 million tons; exports reached 89.6 million tons; imports reached 119 million tons, up 7%.
Container throughput was also estimated at 13.23 million TEUs, up 13%, reflecting stability in container shipping operations across all three main cargo groups.
