North Korean spy satellite 'takes photos of White House, Pentagon'

VnExpressVnExpress28/11/2023

North Korea said Kim Jong-un viewed photos of the White House, the Pentagon and a series of aircraft carriers at the Norfolk base sent by the Malligyong-1 satellite.

"Leader Kim Jong-un viewed photos of the Norfolk Naval Base, Newport News Shipyard, Virginia Military Airfield, the White House and the Pentagon. The series of images were sent by satellite at 11:35 p.m. and 11:36 p.m. on November 27," the North Korean central news agency KCNA said.

North Korean media added that its spy satellites detected four US aircraft carriers and one British aircraft carrier flying over the Norfolk base and Newport News plant.

US officials have not commented on the information.

North Korea's UN Ambassador Kim Song spoke before the Security Council on November 27, defending the decision to launch a satellite and saying that no country is in a security environment as severe as North Korea.

"The US has been constantly threatening us with nuclear weapons. The DPRK has the legitimate right to develop, test, produce and possess weapon systems equivalent to what the US is deploying or researching," he said.

North Korea successfully launched the Malligyong-1 military reconnaissance satellite into orbit on the night of November 21. On November 23, Mr. Kim viewed the first photos sent back by the satellite, which showed Anderson military airfield, Apra port and a series of major US military bases on the Pacific island of Guam.

South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik said North Korea was “exaggerating” when it said Kim had seen images of Guam. Seoul said it was impossible to assess the capabilities of the Malligyong-1 satellite, as Pyongyang has not released any images despite repeatedly claiming to have photographed “key targets” in the US and South Korea.

The foreign ministers of the United States, Japan and South Korea spoke by phone on November 24 to "strongly condemn North Korea's satellite launch as destabilizing to the region," according to the US State Department.
