Imec Nanotechnology Research Center has launched a super-small smart pill that can completely replace conventional endoscopic methods.
Measuring just 2.1cm long and 0.75cm wide, the pill is designed to "travel" through the digestive system for several days.
The breakthrough of this technology is the ability to continuously measure acidity and temperature in the stomach and intestines, every 20 seconds, and transmit the data in real time to an external monitoring device.
This invention is considered an important breakthrough compared to current diagnostic methods such as endoscopy, colonoscopy or video capsules. These traditional methods often only provide "snapshots" and require patients to undergo complicated preparation processes such as dieting or taking laxatives.
The project is a collaboration between the OnePlanet Research Center, Imec, and the Dutch universities of Wageningen and Radboud. Although still in the testing phase, the researchers hope that in the near future, the pill will become a regular, at-home monitoring tool for gastrointestinal health.
The success of this smart pill not only simplifies the diagnostic process but also opens a new era in continuous and non-invasive monitoring of gut health, bringing hope to millions of people facing digestive problems.
