From an actor who specializes in villain roles
Possessing a handsome appearance and a diverse acting style, Viet Anh is often chosen by directors to play the roles of a playboy and a cunning person. His characters in films such as Chay An , Nguoi Phan Xen , Me Cung , Sinh Tu all got into trouble with the law because of their greed for money and fame. Starting acting in the 2000s, Viet Anh has been to prison 8 times on screen.
In his acting career, Cao Thanh Lam in Running from the Law is the role that helped the actor leave a deep impression in the hearts of the audience. He plays the son of the Deputy Minister of Economy - a playboy, womanizer, drug addict.

To perform the "drug craving" scenes and satisfy Cao Thanh Lam's addiction, Viet Anh once said, he had to apply what he observed, contemplated on movies and used a lot of imagination. Part 1 of the film ended with Lam's 10-year prison sentence.
Part 2 aired in 2008, depicting Cao Thanh Lam's return to his old ways after being released from prison. Lam connects drug addicts, sets up an illegal business network, and bribes many individuals and organizations. At the end of the film, he falls from the second floor of the villa to the ground and dies from a drug overdose.
With his successful performance in two parts of the film Running from the Law , Viet Anh was honored in the category of Actor in Film - Television at the 2008 Golden Apricot Awards. Many years later, when mentioning him, the audience still thinks of Cao Thanh Lam as the most outstanding role in the actor's career.

In 2017, Viet Anh returned with the villainous role of Phan Hai in The Judge. This character is the son of boss Phan Quan (played by the late People's Artist Hoang Dung) - specializing in drug smuggling, protection of nightclubs, bars and other underworld activities.
Viet Anh's role impressed with his wild, impulsive nature and humorous lines. Phan Hai's series of quotes were once a trend on social networks because of their witty yet realistic nature.
After transforming into "martial arts" roles, in 2019, Viet Anh participated in The Labyrinth as lawyer Dong Hoa - a seemingly kind person but the "final boss" behind all crimes. Because he understood the law, Dong Hoa repeatedly fooled the investigation agency. But in the end, he still could not overcome justice, was exposed and fell into the net of the law.
Viet Anh received many compliments for his role as Mai Hong Vu in "Sinh Tu" (Photo: VTV).
He continued to maintain this character image in Sinh Tu (2019). He played Mai Hong Vu - a clever businessman who knows how to flatter the authorities in the province to get them to cover up his crimes.
Sharing about the success of the film, Viet Anh said: "When watching the film, the audience will see the role of Vu changing like a chameleon. The character is diverse in appearance and always changing in psychology, so I often have to change the way I act to best suit it."
His efforts were well rewarded. Every look, gesture and flexibility in the actor's acting was highly appreciated by the audience. Thanks to that, he was honored as the Best Actor at the 40th National Television Festival.
To decent roles on screen
After more than 20 years of playing villains, Viet Anh surprised the audience when he appeared with a different image in Sunflower Against the Sun. His role as Hoang made the audience excited because of his flamboyant appearance, often wearing colorful clothes, and a somewhat cheerful and humorous personality.
Viet Anh said that after reading the script, he found Hoang to be a very interesting character, an opportunity for him to experience new types of roles. To properly portray the character's appearance in the first part of the film, the actor had to order the designer to make him a collection of shirts printed with multi-colored patterns.

In 2022, Viet Anh returned to the screen as a single father in the movie Ex-husband, Ex-wife, Ex-lover. No longer the rough appearance of a gangster, or a criminal disguised as a decent person, Viet Anh brought new emotions to the audience when transforming into a family man.
At the film’s press conference, the actor shed tears as he said that the role of Viet in the film reminded him of his own reality. This is also the character he has always longed to portray in his acting career.
Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Viet Anh said that Viet is the character he is most satisfied with. "It may not be the most impressive role in the audience's heart compared to my previous roles, but Viet brings me the most emotions.
This movie is quite special to me because from the beginning I identified it as my memory with my daughter. I also have disadvantages because I don't have many opportunities to be with my daughter and witness her growing up.
In particular, there has never been a movie that made me cry right away when I held the script in my hand, the emotions came immediately," the actor said.
Viet Anh affirmed: "Up to now, I feel a bit old and people are too familiar with the type of roles Viet Anh plays in movies. What I hope for now is to bring the audience something new, a different image of myself."
In the film The War Without Borders currently airing on VTV1, Viet Anh plays the role of Lieutenant Colonel Tran Dinh Trung - Chief of Muong Luong Border Guard Station. This is the first time the actor has donned a soldier's uniform, becoming the Border Guard soldier he has always dreamed of.
At the film's press conference, Viet Anh said that the role was a new step, which required him to put in a lot of effort to climb up and conquer it. "Fortunately, since Doan Quoc Dam emerged as a "golden face in the prison village", I have also been "reduced" a lot. From then on, I also made it very clear to the film crew that if the role is a prisoner, don't call me.
In the last few films, I have been able to play a decent person. The role of Trung in the film is an extremely decent person, clearly depicting the image of a soldier in the Vietnam People's Army," Viet Anh said.
