Vietnam lost ticket to U17 Women's Asia to Philippines

Holding many advantages, Vietnam lost 0-1 to the Philippines, thereby losing the ticket to the 2024 AFC U17 Women's Finals.

Before the final match, Vietnam and the Philippines both won against Bangladesh and lost to Australia. Both teams have three points after two matches in Group B of the second qualifying round, but Vietnam is in second place thanks to a better goal difference of +1 compared to -2. In addition, coach Akira Ijiri and his team will play at home at the VFF Youth Football Training Center.

The match on the evening of September 24th started with Vietnam dominating the game. Many opportunities were created but young strikers Hoai Trinh, Thanh Hieu, Quynh Anh lacked the coolness to score the opening goal.

In the second half, the Philippines tried to increase the speed, taking advantage of set pieces and reaped the rewards thanks to a moment of genius in the 56th minute. From a free kick close to the right touchline about 40 meters from the goal, Isabella Preston suddenly shot straight, the ball went beyond the reach of goalkeeper Le Thi Thu to open the score.

Conceding the first goal made the Vietnamese players lose composure in their attacks, unable to penetrate the tall and disciplined defense of the Philippines. Losing 0-1, many young Vietnamese players could not hold back their tears. The team missed the final round after qualifying for the first time in 2019, seeing the Philippines and Australia advance in Group B.

The second round of the 2024 AFC U17 Championship qualifiers includes eight teams that passed the first qualifying round and were divided into two groups. The teams played a round-robin tournament, with the top two and second-placed teams advancing to the finals. In Group A, the spots to advance belonged to South Korea and Thailand, who were in the same group with India and Iran.

Previously, four teams were determined including host Indonesia, defending champion Japan, runner-up North Korea and third-placed China. The final round will take place in April 2024.
