This match is not just about tactics, talent or goals. It is also a clash of philosophies. PSG and Inter Milan represent two opposing models of how to manage an elite football team.
On one side is the unlimited investment to build a global brand. On the other side is the improvement of efficiency and financial control as a way to compete. PSG is remembered for its huge spending. That is 790 million euros in personnel costs, of which 659 million euros are wages.
At the other extreme is Inter Milan, who have managed to stabilise their structure after years of financial difficulties. Their personnel costs are half that of their rivals at €309m (€227m of which is wages), a figure that is increasingly close to UEFA’s sustainability standards.
Responsible austerity has helped the Nerazzurri reduce losses from €239m in 2020-21 to just €27m in 2023-24, and they are forecast to be profitable this season.
The difference is not just in wages, but also in how they spend in the transfer market. PSG have spent more than €823 million since the 2021-2022 season. Even after the departures of Mbappe and Neymar, they have always maintained a negative balance of more than €440 million.
Inter Milan, on the other hand, are natural sellers, with a positive balance of €116m. They have sold stars like Lukaku, Hakimi and Onana to reinvest wisely.
And Inter have done it without losing their competitive edge: this is their second Champions League final in three years.
The battle between PSG and Inter Milan is also a battle between two owners. PSG remains under the control of Qatar Sports Investments, which has transformed the club into a global soft power tool since 2011. They have unique commercial deals and an international reach that few can match.
While Inter Milan were taken over by Oaktree Capital in 2024, an American fund took over the club after Suning defaulted on a €395 million loan. With them came a new era at Inter Milan: financial restructuring, cost control and a focus on long-term investment.
