Paris police chief Laurent Nunez has announced that 5,400 police officers will be deployed in Paris on the day of the Champions League final between PSG and Inter at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.
However, if PSG win, a wave of celebrations in Paris is expected to lead to unrest. The decision to beef up security comes after a horrific incident earlier this week in Liverpool, when a car ploughed into a crowd of fans.
To ensure maximum safety, Mr. Nunez announced that traffic around the Arc de Triomphe - the famous symbol of Paris - will be blocked from noon on May 31. In addition, the Champs-Élysées Avenue and surrounding streets will also be closed that evening.
The reason for this caution is not without reason. PSG's victory over Arsenal, which secured their place in the final, turned a Parisian night into a chaotic one, with 47 people arrested and three others injured after being hit by a car.
"From 6pm on May 31, no vehicles will be allowed on the Champs-Élysées and perpendicular streets," Mr. Nunez affirmed.
We will be extremely resolute. There will be immediate intervention as soon as there is damage or attack on law enforcement," he added.
With such a strong police force, Paris is putting safety first, ensuring that the joy of victory (if any) will not be tainted with violence.
