The second meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) took place from July 22 to August 2 in Geneva.
The meeting was held to consider principles and ways to promote the full implementation and universality of the NPT and to make recommendations for the NPT Review Conference scheduled to be held in New York in 2026. The meeting was attended by delegations representing NPT member states and international organizations.
Representing the Vietnamese delegation attending and speaking at the meeting, Deputy Head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission in Geneva Cung Duc Han affirmed Vietnam's consistent policy of supporting anti-proliferation towards comprehensive and complete disarmament of nuclear weapons.
Vietnam appreciates the key role of the NPT in efforts to eliminate and prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, ensuring the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Presenting a number of proposals at the meeting, Vietnam called on member countries to continue their efforts to strengthen the implementation and universality of the NPT; to implement all three pillars of the NPT in a balanced and comprehensive manner and to make substantial progress in the disarmament pillar.
Vietnam emphasized efforts to ensure security for countries without nuclear weapons, including the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones; called on nuclear powers to join the Protocol to the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ).
Besides proposing measures to promote effective implementation of the NPT, Vietnam affirmed the importance of relevant international treaties on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament; called on countries to join and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and jointly promote the early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
In addition, Deputy Head of the Delegation Cung Duc Han also informed about Vietnam's positive and responsible contributions to preventing proliferation, nuclear disarmament, ensuring nuclear security and safety in recent times; affirmed that Vietnam is ready to coordinate with member countries to continue making positive contributions at the meeting to prepare for the NPT Review Conference in 2026./.
