VNPT overcomes floods to help people in Central Vietnam

In the midst of the vast sea of water, when many areas of the Central region are still in darkness due to power outages, each call is a reassurance, a boost of faith and hope for each house and each person who is still struggling to cope with the flood. Behind that, are the silent achievements that VNPT people are silently contributing.

Green light of hope

“11:22 p.m. on October 28. It’s late… clothes are still soaked, the road is long… flashlights are still shining on every fault, every cable, vehicles are still transporting fuel to stations with generators. Floods cannot subdue people’s hearts…”.

“This afternoon, October 29, the rain fell heavily again, floodwaters crawled back up the road, swallowing the streets. Back on the road…”.

These are a few of the countless "diary" lines hastily shared by the "green-shirt warriors" of VNPT in recent days, when the central provinces, from Hue to Da Nang, Quang Ngai are still submerged in floods. Many days ago, heavy rains began to fall, affecting the electricity - road - school - station systems of the central provinces. In particular, from October 27 to 29, VNPT provinces quickly deployed rescue work, repaired telecommunications infrastructure, and ensured smooth communication for the people.

In Hue, as of the morning of October 30, floodwaters had begun to recede, the water level had dropped by about 0.4m but still slowly. Power grids were still out in many places. At VNPT's mobile charging points in Hue city, Phong Dien, Huong Tra, Quang Dien communes..., many people still came. Each phone lit up, greetings were accompanied by sighs of relief, and there were also sobs...

Mr. Pham Ngoc Hiep, Deputy Director of VNPT Hue, directly participated in rescue work for telecommunication stations in Hue.

Previously, since October 28, VNPT Hue has activated the system of free battery charging points and supported stable packages for customers in most of the heavily affected areas in the province. Each power outlet, each generator, each charging cable was given away overnight, not only as a source of energy but also as a source of faith, helping people overcome the flood.

“VNPT Hue understands that when natural disasters strike, what people need most is not only material things but also connection and sharing. Therefore, we are here to help people maintain contact and send messages. Sometimes, just hearing the voice of a loved one is enough to give them the strength to overcome everything,” said Mr. Pham Ngoc Hiep, Deputy Director of VNPT Hue.

Mr. Do Quoc Tuan, infrastructure staff 2, VNPT Hue Infrastructure Center shared that until today (October 30), many places in the area of responsibility such as Phong Dinh, Huong Van, Huong Toan communes are still isolated in the sea of water. VNPT brothers had to rent boats and ferries from the locals to bring in machinery, equipment, and engine fuel to handle the broken stations and transmission towers. There were places where the water was still up to the chest, making it very difficult to move.

“At some stations, the water rose so quickly that we couldn’t react in time, so we just tried to save our equipment and engines. It was tiring and hard, but everyone had to try because they knew that there were many families waiting to contact their loved ones far away,” said Mr. Tuan.

Keep the faith, stay strong in the flood center

Leaving home before the flood, eating and sleeping in the flood, with only backpacks, tools, and machines as friends, that is the story that many VNPT people in the Central region like Mr. Tran Anh Tu, a technical staff at the VNPT Telecommunications Center in Huong Dien commune, have experienced every time the flood comes.

For the past 4 days, he has been in the mindset of “eating quickly and sleeping quickly”, wherever people reported that the signal was lost or the water receded, he was there. “I was riding a motorbike that was flooded, one died, and I had to borrow another one from a local to continue. When I was too tired, I took a break, then set off again,” Tu shared.

When asked about his family, Mr. Tu just smiled, "My wife and children are used to it." The house was half submerged, property was damaged, and relatives were racing against the floodwaters, but when things were needed, people needed it, and customers needed it, they had to go.

As of October 30, according to statistics, in Da Nang, floodwaters in areas such as Dai Loc commune have fallen 1 meter, while other areas are slowly falling. Power grids are still widespread, concentrated in districts of the old Quang Nam: Dai Loc, Que Son, Tien Phuoc, Duy Xuyen, Hoi An. A similar situation is occurring in Hue city. Particularly in Quang Ngai, water has receded a lot in the plains, while some mountainous areas of the old districts: Son Ha, Son Tay, Tra Bong are still partially flooded, traffic is cut off.

VNPT said that it is urgently monitoring the flood situation closely, with the spirit of restoring the network as the flood recedes. Currently, the damaged fiber optic cable on the Ho Chi Minh trail (sections such as Da Nang - Phuoc Son, Phuoc Son - Dak To and Hien - A Luoi) has been basically resolved. The network operator is also maintaining thousands of generators at mobile broadcasting stations to ensure the best communication network for people. However, many areas are still deeply flooded and have landslides, so rescue work in some areas is still extremely difficult.

"VNPT's spirit is to immediately restore the network as soon as the flood recedes," affirmed VNPT's leader.

Not only a telecommunications infrastructure provider, VNPT also defines its mission as a service provider for life, for people. Because in natural disasters or adversity, connection is not only technology, but also a bridge of humanity, a means for people to rely on, share and overcome storms together," VNPT representative added.

From the “green dots of hope” in Hue, to the field charging stations in Da Nang, to the signal stations in the mountains of Quang Ngai, all are symbols of the sense of responsibility and heart of VNPT people, who always put people at the center of every action.

From the “green lights” from the charging stations to the flashlights in the dark, the signal columns, the cable sections connected to ensure smooth signal transmission during floods… that is proof of the spirit of “For people - For the community” that VNPT always pursues.

During the storm and flood, VNPT not only maintained the telecommunications network, but also maintained trust and love, so that no one was left behind.
