The school just finished warning, the student... went missing again

Recently, after working with authorities to find two new students missing in just 3 days (from September 17 to September 10) in a hotel in Tay Ninh , the Vietnam Aviation Academy had to issue an urgent warning.

These two students were scammed and lured by bad guys using fake international study abroad, work and internship programs.

According to information from the incident, on September 17, Vietnam Aviation Academy received feedback from parents about their children losing contact after participating in an "international exchange program" that was supposedly organized by the Ministry of Education and Training and the Academy.

This program has many unusual requirements such as students must prove their financial capacity from 525-750 million VND, submit notarized copies of many personal documents. Notably, this fake document also publicly announced the list of students with full name, date of birth, email...

On September 18, the school immediately issued a warning about students being scammed and missing under the fake "international program" scheme on September 18.

But soon after, the second freshman "fell into the trap" of a scammer and went missing until he was found in a hotel in Tay Ninh.

“We keep warning, and right after the warning, students fall into the trap of bad guys using the same scam tricks. It’s incomprehensible,” a school representative exclaimed.

Vietnam Aviation Academy also informed that last February, the family of NMQ, a third-year student, also reported that they had transferred 500 million VND to a person claiming to be a consultant for a full scholarship program at the University of New South Wales, Australia. At that time, after transferring the money, the family could not contact the student.

"We will continue to deploy an early warning system, coordinate with families to protect students and equip them with skills to identify and prevent fraud," said a school representative.

The above incident is similar to the case of a female senior student at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine who was recently scammed out of 7 billion VND. This student was tricked into winning a scholarship under the international student exchange program that the school had warned about earlier.

Students are busy studying and do not get the information.

Recently, TTH, a third-year student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, was "kidnapped online" after receiving a call from a stranger, claiming to be an officer from the prosecutor's office, informing H. that he was involved in a money laundering ring.

After talking with the stranger, this male student rented a hotel room to lock himself up and repeatedly transferred money to the scammer.

Despite warnings from the school, TTH students are still "kidnapped online" because they are "busy studying and do not have access to information" (Photo: Thuan Thien).

When rescued, talking about the school's repeated warnings but still being tricked by bad guys, H. shared: "Although the school had been spreading propaganda, I was busy studying so I didn't get the information."

A representative of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine said that many students only know how to study, go to school, then go home and continue studying.

Besides books, children pay little attention to daily news, have little social interaction, and lack basic skills, so they are easily fooled by old tricks.

While the children are good students, they are well-behaved and trusted by their parents. When their children ask for money to prove that they are going to study abroad, many parents trust them and transfer the money immediately, without any doubts.

Faced with the fact that authorities, experts, and the media continuously warn about fraud, but the number of victims continues to increase, especially those who are deceived by very old forms, Lieutenant Colonel Dao Trung Hieu, PhD in Criminology, said: "Vietnamese people are often indifferent to security risks. They do not read those warnings, thinking that if it happens to anyone, it will probably not happen to them."

According to Mr. Hieu, when people participate in digital life, the first thing is to constantly raise their vigilance like a firewall to protect themselves. Next, each person needs to slow down before transferring money, and not transfer money without knowing exactly who the recipient is.

At a conference on the topic of students using cell phones organized by the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Dong, Deputy Head of the PA03 Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police, said that information on the internet is endless, but users only need to spend 15-30 seconds to read warnings about fraud.

Therefore, when using social networks, students need to remember to take the time to grasp information about fraud warnings to protect themselves.
