King Charles III and Queen Camilla were officially crowned in the most lavish ceremony in Britain in 70 years.
The 360-year-old St. Edwardian Crown was placed on the head of King Charles III on May 6, marking his official coronation in a traditional ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London (UK). At the age of 75, he became the oldest monarch to be crowned, after succeeding his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022.
Assume the Throne
Crowds had already flocked to the British capital to witness the historic moment, with some even setting up camp days in advance along the Mall. According to CNN, since the morning of May 6, London police announced that all areas along the route were full and would not accept any more people. At 10:20 a.m. (local time), the Diamond Jubilee State Coach carrying King Charles III and Queen Camilla left Buckingham Palace for Westminster Abbey, accompanied by a cavalry escort to the sound of the national anthem.

At Westminster Abbey, witnessed by about 100 heads of state and government, including royals from Europe to Asia, King Charles III took the oath to uphold the law and protect the Church of England, before ascending the throne in a traditional ceremony that dates back to 1066 when King William I was crowned. The king was anointed and received the royal regalia, before returning to Buckingham Palace with Queen Camilla in the Gold State Coach. They were followed by a parade of 7,000 soldiers and 19 military bands. At the end of the ceremony, the king, the queen and many members of the royal family appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave to the crowd below. Due to bad weather, the Royal Air Force's display here was shortened, with the participation of helicopters and the Red Arrows display team.

New era
According to The Guardian , British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the coronation of King Charles III was a proud display of history, culture and tradition. "A vivid demonstration of the modern character of our country, and a ceremony that ushered in a new era."
During the coronation, King Charles III still showed his new ideas in many aspects, according to AFP. The king invited only 2,300 guests to attend the main event inside Westminster Abbey, much fewer than his mother's coronation in 1953, which had more than 8,000 people in attendance. King Charles III was also the first British monarch to read aloud a prayer, wishing that people of all faiths and beliefs "may be led together to the path of peace ". The ceremony was attended by representatives of many other religions and the king vowed to "seek to foster an environment where people of all faiths can live freely". In addition, for the first time in a coronation in nearly 1,000 years of history, there were female bishops. In fact, England under King Charles III was a more religiously and ethnically diverse country than when his mother was crowned.

The coronation decorations of Westminster Abbey also reflected his great concern for biodiversity and sustainability, with flowers from the Isle of Skye in Scotland to Cornwall on the southwest coast of England. Single-use plastics and floral foam were banned, while all flowers will be donated to charity after the ceremony. Many of the robes will be reused, while the anointing oil used in the ceremony is entirely plant-based. Church of England Archbishop Justin Welby also spoke at the service about the king's priorities, including "how we nurture and encourage the younger generation to protect the natural world".
