While Tutankhamun may be the most well-known Pharaoh in modern popular culture, Ramses II was undeniably one of the most powerful and famous Egyptian kings.
The prosperity of the reign of Ramses II is being presented at the exhibition "Ramses and Gold of the Pharaohs" in Cologne (Koeln, western Germany) from July 13, 2024 to January 6, 2025.
"Ramses was a great king, a warrior. He fought many battles and signed peace treaties. Notably, he was also a builder, and traces of his reign can be found everywhere," said Zahi Hawass, a renowned archaeologist and former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities.
Mr. Hawass is the curator of the exhibition "Ramses and Gold of the Pharaohs." Before coming to Cologne in western Germany, the exhibition was held in Sydney, Australia and Paris, France.
“Our modern world is very different from ancient Egypt,” said Mr. Hawass. “This exhibition allows visitors to delve into Ramses’ world and discover a completely different way of life.”
The exhibition features 182 incredibly valuable artifacts, including the sarcophagus of Ramses II – one of the most impressive royal coffins ever discovered from ancient Egypt – and other unique treasures and artifacts, some of which have never left Egypt before.
In this fascinating exhibition, visitors will discover a stunning collection of well-preserved artefacts, including coffins, animal mummies, magnificent jewellery, spectacular royal masks, exquisite amulets and ornate golden tomb treasures, demonstrating the superb craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian artisans.
The exhibition also features a virtual reality experience that takes visitors on a whirlwind tour of two of Ramses’ most impressive sites: the Abu Simbel Temple and the tomb of Queen Nefertari, the pharaoh Ramses II’s favorite wife. In cinematic motion seats, viewers “fly” through temples, sandstorms, and even come face-to-face with Ramses’ mummy. The experience is both educational and fun.
The exhibition "Ramses & the Gold of the Pharaohs" gives visitors an up-close look at the life, achievements and stunning monuments of Ramses the Great.
Ramses II was the second longest-reigning pharaoh of ancient Egypt after King Pepi II of the 6th Dynasty. He was also one of the last powerful pharaohs of ancient Egypt.
He married eight women and fathered about 100 children. His 66-year reign during the 19th Dynasty is considered the height of the empire's glory and power. Today, Ramses II's mummy is kept in the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo, Egypt./.
