Mr. Cuom's small house is located on the road leading to the commune People's Committee headquarters. When asked about his career and career, Mr. Cuom slowly said: "In 2008, after getting married, my wife and I moved out. At that time, our greatest assets were love and determination to rise up. At that time, we had no land or capital, so I had to ask the neighbors to contribute to build a simple thatched house for us to live in. Life was still full of difficulties, but we were not discouraged."
At first, Mr. Cuom and his wife opened a small shop selling groceries and food services. His wife was a kindergarten teacher, and he used to work as a local forest ranger at Vinh Linh Forest Protection Department (2005 - 2008), then transferred to work as a forest ranger at the Ben Hai River Basin Protection Forest Management Board (2010 - 2013). There was a time when he had to quit his job due to staff cuts, but in 2014 he returned to his job as a forest ranger. Although his job was temporarily stable, he always had a dream, which was to build an agricultural and forestry production model on his small piece of land.
In April 2023, the couple officially started building a comprehensive farm. With a small amount of savings, along with the spirit of "cutting your coat according to your cloth", Mr. Cuom boldly invested in livestock and crop diversification. Initially, he raised 5 buffaloes, 5 cows, 10 goats, nearly 200 poultry (ducks, geese, chickens, etc.), 9 pigs and dug a pond to raise freshwater fish on an area of 2 sao, releasing various types of fish: red tilapia, grass carp, carp, white bird, etc. He also devoted part of the area to growing vegetables, taking care of more than 2 hectares of cajuput forest that had been invested in and planted since 2015.
After a year of establishment, although the number of livestock has fluctuated due to sales, his model is still stable with 5 buffaloes, 5 cows, 4 goats, more than 20 poultry, 4 pigs, and fish in a good growth period. He has just replanted the vegetable garden, and the cajuput forest has been exploited for a period in 2022, promising to continue to bring in revenue in the coming years.
Up to now, after deducting all expenses, Mr. Cuom's family's economic model has brought in an average profit of about 70-80 million VND/year. With the average income in remote areas like Vinh O commune, this is not a small number. More importantly, thanks to this model, his family has gradually escaped poverty, had the conditions to raise their children to study, and stabilized their lives.
Not only is he diligent in doing business, Mr. Cuom is also an active member of the Commune Veterans Association. As the Head of the Thuc Village Veterans Association, he always sets an example and encourages villagers to boldly do business and develop the economy. Whenever a household in the village needs to share farming experiences, he is ready to give enthusiastic guidance.
In the midst of the dense forests of Vinh O commune, where transportation is difficult and the land is dry and rocky, the story of Ho Van Cuom is like a small flame that burns steadily in the middle of the night, lighting up the belief in human strength. As the Chairman of the Vinh O Commune Veterans Association, Ho Van Tuan, said: “Cuong’s example of overcoming difficulties is not only an encouragement for the poor, but also shows that, if you dare to think and dare to do, anyone can write their own story of changing their life.
In the journey of building new rural areas, aiming at sustainable development of ethnic minority areas, it is necessary to replicate typical examples like Mr. Ho Van Cuom, a farmer who dares to dream, dares to do and constantly strives for a full, independent and affectionate life in the middle of the Truong Son mountain range.
