High blood pressure is a "silent killer," causing many serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and stroke. In particular, the WHO has just pointed out two warning signs of very high blood pressure that appear on the face, which few people are aware of.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) states that high blood pressure rarely has noticeable symptoms, so many people are unaware they have it. Many people with high blood pressure still feel healthy. But even if you feel healthy, you should still have your blood pressure checked regularly, according to the Express .

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are two signs of high blood pressure that can appear on the face: nosebleeds and blurred vision. However, these signs mainly occur in people with "very high" blood pressure.

Nosebleeds

The UK National Health Service ( NHS) says nosebleeds are more likely to occur in people with high blood pressure.

Although most experts say that high blood pressure doesn't cause nosebleeds, it's only when blood pressure is extremely high—which can damage the blood vessels inside the nose—that nosebleeds become more likely.

Several recent studies have found that high blood pressure may increase the risk of more severe nosebleeds.

A 2020 study found that people with high blood pressure are 2.7 times more likely to require emergency hospitalization for nosebleeds compared to those with normal blood pressure.

And another study from 2015 tracked the blood pressure of 80 people for 3 months and found that half of the participants experienced frequent nosebleeds.

Researchers concluded that in people with high blood pressure, nosebleeds are very difficult to control.

According to the WHO, there are two possible signs that can appear on the face: nosebleeds and blurred vision. However, these signs mainly occur in people with very high blood pressure.

Blurred vision

The WHO says blurred vision or changes in vision can occur in people with blood pressure of 180/120 or higher. This is because high blood pressure can damage many small blood vessels in the eyes, according to Express .

The American Heart Association states that the following vision problems may occur in people with high blood pressure:

Blood vessel damage: Blurred vision or complete vision loss can occur when there is no blood flow to the retina.

Subretinal fluid accumulation: This fluid buildup under the retina distorts vision or causes scarring that damages eyesight.

Nerve damage: Blocked blood flow can damage the optic nerve.

According to this association, high blood pressure can increase the risk of other eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, which can cause vision loss or blindness if left untreated.

The BHF also points out other signs of high blood pressure such as shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, and headaches. However, the only way to know for sure if you have high blood pressure is to measure it.
