Windows 11 can now open RAR compressed files

Báo Khánh HòaBáo Khánh Hòa26/05/2023

For decades, Windows only supported the ZIP format, meaning users often needed a standalone application like WinRAR to open RAR archives.

The RAR compression format, created exactly 30 years ago, is fully called Roshal Archive, named after its creator Eugene Roshal. This Russian engineer is also the author of WinRAR software, first introduced in 1995 and exists to this day.

Along with zip, RAR is the most popular compression format among users. Therefore, Microsoft's announcement at the Build 2023 event that Windows 11 officially supports opening RAR files immediately attracted attention.

According to the American software company, this is an open source solution that will bring users many new features compared to standalone applications, and not only supports RAR, but also some other popular compressed file formats such as 7-zip, gz... The "minus" point to note is that Windows 11 will initially only be able to read the contents of RAR files, but cannot initialize (compress) them.

To use the new feature, users need to update to the Windows 11 upgrade released this week (via the available Windows Update tool).

This update will also bring many interesting "new dishes" to Microsoft's operating system, including the ability to support power-saving Bluetooth LE; support for automatic subtitle display (Live Caption) for 10 more languages, including Chinese, German, Korean, Spanish...; and fix many existing errors.
