A Stuff reporter who was at the match as a spectator said the confusion left people in a state of panic when the siren sounded. Some began to leave while others remained seated until an announcement was made over the loudspeaker confirming a false alarm at 8.15am (1.15pm GMT).

However, the US media informed reporters that it was a false alarm due to a malfunctioning sprinkler system. Therefore, the match continued after the alarm sounded in the stadium.
