The Women's World Cup has expanded from 24 to 32 teams for the 2023 event in Australia and New Zealand. There will still be 32 teams competing at the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. But by 2031, the number of teams will increase to 48.

The United States will host the 2031 tournament after no other bid was submitted. Expanding the Women’s World Cup would mean adding more host cities and stadiums to the tournament’s plans. In particular, increasing the number of participating teams would give mid-level teams more opportunities to participate, including Vietnam.

With 48 teams participating, the tournament will adopt a 12-group format, increase the total number of matches from 64 to 104, similar to the 2026 men's World Cup, and extend the tournament by one week.

"This is not just about adding 16 teams to the FIFA Women's World Cup, but also about taking the next steps regarding women's football in general," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement.

Many FIFA member associations have the opportunity to benefit from the tournament to develop their women's football structures from a holistic perspective."

Professional footballers' union FIFPRO has welcomed the expansion of the Women's World Cup as evidence of the growth of women's football. FIFPRO said: "It is important that the global growth of women's competitions goes hand in hand with improved working conditions and the advancement of athletes."
