Nghi Son Island Commune - A destination rich in marine cultural heritage

With its pristine beauty, clear blue sea and fine sand, Nghi Son island commune (Nghi Son town, Thanh Hoa province) has become an attractive destination not only for domestic tourists but also for international tourists.

Nghi Son island commune was formerly Cu Lao Bien in An Hoa land, Tuan La commune, Kiet Chue district, later called Tu Chieng Bien Son ward, Ngoc Son district, Tinh Gia prefecture, Thanh Hoa town.

It is known that in the past, to get to the island from the mainland, people had to use boats, but later, due to the impact of geological tectonic processes and people building dikes to reclaim the sea, Nghi Son was connected to the mainland into a strip.

In particular, Nghi Son island commune still preserves the historical and cultural values ​​of the sea and islands over thousands of years such as: the legend of My Chau - Trong Thuy at Ngoc well, Tam Diep - Bien Son defense line, Ton That Co temple, Ong Ninh citadel relic, Sat Hai Dai Vuong temple, Tran Quy Phi temple...

Visitors here often visit the Sat Hai Dai Vuong Temple, facing Hon Me. In local folklore, this is the god who helps people in times of trouble.

According to legend, King Sat Hai's real name was Hoang Ta Thon. In the 13th century, during the resistance war against the invading Yuan army, he achieved many feats.

Another prominent landmark is Bien Son Pagoda, formerly located in Bai Dong, now moved to Nam Son village, and has always been an important part of the spiritual life of the islanders.

Held on the 5th day of Tet every year, Quang Trung Festival is also a special festival in Nghi Son island commune, taking place with traditional rituals: palanquin procession, offering gifts, sacrifices, reading prayers to pray for gods and King Quang Trung to bless and protect a bountiful fishing season, and for boats to return safely to sea.

After the ceremony, the festival takes place with folk songs and performances imbued with elements of island folk arts such as: river singing, tug of war, boating, etc.

With the peninsula terrain, the prominent activities of the people here are fishing and aquaculture. Therefore, from before dawn, the island commune is bustling with fish and shrimp returning to the dock, exchanging and buying and selling seafood.

If you wake up early to go to the market, you will witness the seafood being brought ashore by fishermen and the buying and selling taking place quickly, because of the irresistible freshness.

Coming to Nghi Son, visitors can not only enjoy the cuisine of the fishing village but also stroll and bathe at a very beautiful beach called Bai Dong with smooth golden sand and undulating laterite beaches, creating beautiful frames.

Although this beach is not long, its clear blue water is an ideal place for visitors to bathe, relax and walk along the beach every early morning or late afternoon.

After bathing, visitors can stop to rest in a leaf hut, like a wide umbrella spread out on the sand, and enjoy a steam hotpot with the delicious flavors of the island commune's fresh specialties, such as snails, crabs, jumping squid, silver pomfret, dried squid...

At night, visitors can experience squid fishing with fishermen at sea and enjoy the food right on the boat. In particular, these dishes will be much more delicious when processed and dipped in Nghi Son island fish sauce.
