Ben Tre Import Export Joint Stock Company (Betrimex) cooperates in coconut production and consumption with farmers and cooperatives, with a joint area of about 10 thousand hectares.
Development of production areas
Since its promulgation, Resolution No. 07-NQ/TU has been widely and synchronously deployed to the entire political system and the people. The Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Committee, departments, branches and localities have developed a specific roadmap, assigning clear targets and responsibilities to each level and each branch. The consensus of the people, especially the farmers, has become an important driving force, helping the resolution to be put into practice quickly and effectively.
According to Huynh Quang Duc, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD), one of the highlights is the formation and development of concentrated production areas oriented towards key products. To date, the area of organic coconut has reached 25,000 hectares, exceeding the set target by 25%. Other product groups such as specialty fruit trees, seedlings - ornamental flowers, and high-tech shrimp farming have all reached 100% of the plan. In particular, the area of high-tech shrimp farming has increased sharply in Ba Tri, Binh Dai and Thanh Phu districts, bringing the total area to nearly 4,000 hectares, contributing positively to export turnover and marine economic development.
Along with the expansion of area, the value of products per unit area has increased significantly. In cultivation, the average income is 180 million VND/ha/year. Meanwhile, in the aquaculture sector, this figure is 509 million VND/ha. Intensive brackish water shrimp farming alone reaches 1.3 billion VND/ha.
The province also focused on building and perfecting value chains for key products, helping farmers stabilize output and increase added value. All value chains reached 100% of the resolution, such as: shrimp reached 1 billion USD and beef reached 500 million USD. The coconut value chain, the province's key export product, reached 838 million USD, equivalent to 83% of the resolution. The chain of seedlings and ornamental flowers reached 400 million USD, reaching 80% of the resolution.
Moving up the value chain
In recent times, the province has focused on the construction and development of agricultural cooperatives. In the period of 2021 - 2025, the province established 49 new cooperatives, bringing the total number to 170. Of these, 85 cooperatives have participated in the value chain of the province's key agricultural products.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Huynh Quang Duc, in order to complete and improve the quality of the chains, the province has supported cooperation connections between cooperatives, cooperative groups with processing and consumption enterprises, aiming to closely link from production to market. In particular, the deepest and widest linkage is in the coconut chain. Thereby, contributing to increasing production value for industries. Specifically, the production value of the coconut processing industry (comparable price 2010) in the period of 2021 - 2025 is estimated to increase by an average of 2.05%/year, coconut export turnover in the period of 2021 - 2025 is estimated to increase by an average of 8.75%/year, accounting for 29.73% of the province's total export turnover. The production value of the seafood production and processing industry (at 2010 comparable prices) in the 2021 - 2025 period is estimated to decrease by an average of 1.99% per year, while the export turnover of seafood products in the 2021 - 2025 period is estimated to increase by an average of 14.39% per year.
One of the breakthroughs of the agricultural sector in recent times is the promotion of the application of science and technology. Currently, the province has more than 27,400 hectares of production according to GAP, organic or equivalent standards, contributing to improving product quality and expanding export markets.
In particular, key products such as coconut, green-skinned grapefruit, and durian have been granted growing area codes and geographical indications. Many products have been registered for trademark protection in international markets such as Canada and China. In addition, the system of more than 350 export growing area codes and 34 packaging facility codes allows businesses to access demanding markets such as the US, Europe, and Japan, creating a solid foundation for the province's agricultural products to reach further.
Investment resources from the budget and social channels have also been actively mobilized. The province has allocated more than VND 3,400 billion for dozens of agricultural infrastructure projects, irrigation systems, pumping stations, reservoirs and domestic water supply projects to serve areas affected by saltwater intrusion. The logistics system is gradually taking shape with the planning of a smart agricultural urban area - clean industry and comprehensive services on a scale of 5,300 hectares in Ben Tre City and Chau Thanh District.
After nearly 5 years of implementation, Resolution No. 07-NQ/TU has helped to raise the level of agricultural products in the province. At the same time, it has affirmed the economic role of agriculture as a pillar in the local economic development strategy in the coming period.
As of March 2025, the province has more than 60 applications for certification trademarks and collective trademarks; of which, there are 57 protection certificates, 9 geographical indications “Ben Tre”, 13 certification trademarks, 35 collective trademarks; 2 certification trademarks with geographical indication “Ben Tre” used for green-skin pomelo and green coconut products are protected in Canada. The province is building 4 geographical indications (beef, chicken, coconut products, shrimp) and durian is registering for protection and establishing rights in China. |
