Ivan Schalk, 39, had been thinking about building the world's longest bicycle ever since he read about it in the Guinness Book of Records as a child. In 2018, he decided to make his dream a reality, turning his spare time into a world record-breaking journey.
To complete this challenging project, Schalk gathered like-minded people in his hometown of Prinsenbeek. They spent thousands of hours of hard work, designing and manufacturing every detail, turning the idea into reality.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly hit, forcing them to put the project on hold for two years. After a hiatus, they returned with more enthusiasm than ever, determined to complete the set goal.
On June 3, 2023, the giant bicycle officially debuted and took on its first challenge. After months of waiting, they officially received confirmation from Guinness Records, but the result surprised them. The bicycle was recognized for the title of "longest tandem bicycle in the world", instead of "longest bicycle in the world" as they had hoped.
According to Guinness, the bike is only allowed to carry a maximum of two people, one in the front driving position and one in the back. However, Schalk designed an additional seat for a third person on an extended metal frame. This led Guinness to decide that the bike did not qualify for the "world's longest bicycle" record.
Despite falling short of their initial goal, Schalk and his team were undeterred. They decided to continue the challenge and set two new records: "the world's longest tandem bicycle" and "the world's largest rideable bicycle" (with two people on board).
After tireless efforts, they successfully conquered both records and received official confirmation from Guinness. This "monster" bike has become the pride of the Prinsenbeek community and is a testament to creativity, perseverance and extraordinary team spirit.
After setting the record, the bike’s mid-frame was returned to the metalworking company in Breda (as it was a rented part, not built by them). The rest will be displayed at the local history museum in Prinsenbeek, becoming a tourist attraction and a source of inspiration for those who are passionate about creativity and conquering challenges.
