With the process of urbanization, in recent years, the Ba Chuc sedge weaving craft is at risk of disappearing. Currently, there are only nearly 30 households still engaged in the craft, mainly female workers. To improve competitiveness, maintain and develop the craft, and help women develop their family economy , in recent years, the Ba Chuc sedge weaving craft village has switched to a cooperative model.

The person who has contributed to "reviving" the sedge weaving craft is Ms. Tran Thi Trang, owner of Trung Trang, in An Hoa A hamlet, Ba Chuc town. Ms. Trang grew up with sedge mats, so she witnessed and understood the ups and downs of the craft better than anyone else. Thanks to the years of working, studying, and learning about handicraft products in many surrounding localities, Ms. Trang has a new perspective. From then on, she cherished and determined to bring with her the desire to innovate the craft village. Starting with the baskets made from sedge produced by her and her mother, which were well received by customers, she learned online to design new models. Then she learned to draw, creating models of handbags, backpacks, wallets, sandals, etc.

Ms. Tran Thi Trang shared: Since joining the Ba Chuc Lepironia Cooperative, she has been able to attend training courses on techniques, management skills, and modern, advanced design capabilities, and visit production models in many places. Thanks to that, the productivity and quality of the Cooperative's products made from Lepironia are very eye-catching and sell very well.

Currently, Ms. Trang receives many orders such as mattresses, hats, handbags, fashion bags, wallets for men and women... On average, Ms. Trang earns over 10 million VND per month, after deducting expenses.

Ms. Nguyen Thi May, Head of the Ba Chuc Sedge Cooperative, said: “To ensure sufficient supply for the Company, the Cooperative has mobilized resources from neighboring communes such as Le Tri, Lac Quoi, and Luong Phi. Those who want to weave can buy sedge from the Cooperative, bring it back to weave and sell it to the Cooperative for 20,000 VND each. The Cooperative then distributes it to the Company for 25,000 - 40,000 VND each. After delivery, the Company will make the basket handle, bottom, mold, add patterns to complete the basket and then export it.”

According to Mr. Phan Ba Phuoc, Vice Chairman of Ba Chuc Town People's Committee, realizing the potential and advantages of sedge, the Party Committee and the town government established the Ba Chuc Sedge Cooperative to guide and teach sedge weaving; create jobs and increase income for households. When joining the Cooperative, the women were supported with vocational training and learned how to weave many types of handicraft products from sedge and have exported them to many countries in Europe, Japan, China, etc.

In recent years, the lives of many people in the border areas have turned a new page thanks to the sedge weaving profession. With new and effective methods, the Cooperative Group has contributed to helping the people of Ba Chuc and many traditional craft villages in Tri Ton district change their thinking about developing traditional craft villages, creating jobs, and increasing income for rural workers, especially ethnic minorities.
