1,100 Vietnamese soldiers on UN peacekeeping mission

According to Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Vietnam has deployed nearly 1,100 soldiers to perform UN peacekeeping missions.

The above content was informed by Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army at the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference held in Berlin (Germany) from May 13 to May 15.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference was attended by more than 100 delegations from UN member states and international organizations. The Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense delegation led by Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan attended the conference.

Speaking at the conference, Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan said that although Vietnam has only participated in UN peacekeeping operations since May 2014, it has achieved encouraging results.

Vietnam has deployed nearly 1,100 soldiers to perform UN peacekeeping missions. In addition, Vietnam always encourages and creates opportunities for female soldiers to participate in peacekeeping activities, regularly coordinating with the United Nations and international partners to organize international training courses and exercises.

At the conference, Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan also affirmed that Vietnam will continue to maintain its forces in the area and commit to participating more deeply in United Nations peacekeeping activities through research to expand new types of units such as: mechanized infantry units, military police, information, mission protection units...

At the same time, Vietnam also commits to maintaining and researching to increase the proportion of women participating in this activity, and to strengthen coordination with international partners to improve training capacity and readiness to participate in peacekeeping activities in the future.

During his participation in the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference, Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan had a bilateral meeting with Mr. Giles Norman, Director General of the Department of Transnational Threats and Conflicts, Head of the Canadian delegation to the conference. At the meeting, Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan affirmed that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense always attaches importance to defense cooperation with Canada, especially cooperation in the field of peacekeeping.

Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan suggested that the two sides effectively implement the signed Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of peacekeeping; and hoped that Canada would share experiences, support and assist Vietnam in implementing the policy of sending cadres to run for the positions of Deputy Commander and Commander of the Peacekeeping Mission.

Also during his attendance at the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference, Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan had a meeting on the sidelines with UN Deputy Secretary-General Atul Khare.
