On the evening of June 6, 4 restaurants in Vietnam were awarded one star for the first time by the Michelin Guide, the world's most prestigious culinary ranking organization.

The first four Vietnamese restaurants to be awarded a Michelin star include Anan Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City; Gia, Hibana by Koki and Tam Vi, all in Hanoi .

Anăn Saigon was the only restaurant in Vietnam to make it into the top 50 best restaurants in Asia in early 2023. Gia Restaurant is the workplace of Chef Sam Tran - a talented young chef recognized by Michelin. Hibana by Koki serves Japanese-style dishes and is located in a 5-star hotel in Hanoi. Tam Vi is a popular restaurant with a menu of all Vietnamese dishes, priced from 200,000 VND per person.

“We went through 6 months without any customers and now people have accepted Anan Saigon’s dishes,” the restaurant owner said when receiving the “star”, about the difficult start-up period 6 years ago.

“Stars” is the rating system of the Michelin Guide, the world’s most prestigious culinary rating organization. One star is for a restaurant that “has delicious food, worth stopping to enjoy”. Two stars is for “a restaurant with excellent food, worth returning to”. Three stars (the highest) is for “a place with excellent food, worth planning to visit in person”.

In addition to the four Michelin-starred restaurants, 103 restaurants in Vietnam were listed in three categories: Michelin Selected (Michelin recommended); Michelin Guide Special Awards (special awards) and Bib Gourmand (delicious eateries at affordable prices).

70 Michelin Selected restaurants, including 32 in Hanoi and 38 in Ho Chi Minh City. The list includes some popular names such as Anh Vu Fish Cake, Huong Lien Bun Cha (Obama Bun Cha), A Ban Mountain Dew, and Pho Ga Cham.

The Bib Gourmand list includes 29 restaurants, including 13 in Hanoi and 16 in Ho Chi Minh City, including some representatives such as 1946 Cua Bac, Bun Cha Ta, Cha Ca Thang Long, Chao Ban, Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su, Bep Me In, Chay Garden, and Com Tam Ba Ghien.

Three Michelin Guide Special Awards were presented, including the Somelier Award to Mr. Yu Yamamoto, the Service Award to Chef Nguyen Thi Nu - Vietnam House Restaurant and the Young Chef Award to Chef Sam Tran - Gia Restaurant.

Restaurants in the Michelin Guide must meet the following criteria: Food quality; Cooking techniques; Flavor balance and harmony; Chef personality and Food consistency. The judging team only visits the restaurants once to evaluate.

Ngo Thi Phi Nga, owner of Pho Bo Au Trieu, one of the names in the Bib Gourmand category, said she felt very happy and honored to be on the Michelin award list. She hopes that after Vietnam has restaurants mentioned by Michelin, Vietnamese cuisine will become more famous and known to more tourists.

“We hope to welcome more domestic and foreign guests,” the owner of the 30-year-old beef noodle shop shared.
