The flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam has a yellow star on a red and blue background, with the upper half (red) representing the independent North. The lower half (blue) represents the South, which was not yet independent, and was still under the domination of American imperialism and the Ngo Dinh Diem regime.
After the country was unified, in 1976, the whole country held a general election to elect a National Assembly; the National Assembly established the State and Government and unanimously decided to change the country's name to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, choosing the red flag with a yellow star as the official national flag of Vietnam. That showed that the two regions of the South and the North had been unified, the country was reunited.
The flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam has a special meaning to the Vietnamese people. The red background symbolizes red blood, the color of enthusiasm, will, and revolutionary belief. The yellow star symbolizes the light of revolution, the yellow skin color of the Vietnamese people. The five-pointed star represents the strength of national unity, of the people including scholars, workers, farmers, merchants, and soldiers in the great family of Vietnamese people.
President Ho Chi Minh once wrote that the red flag with yellow star had been stained with the blood of many Vietnamese soldiers in the South and South Central regions, and had traveled from Asia to Europe and from Europe to Asia. The exhibition also displays the Prime Minister's 1956 regulation on the use of the national flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
