In recent days, the weather has been windy and the sea rough, but fisherman Nguyen Van Sam from Phu Hai Ward, Phu Thuy Commune, still goes out to sea. He recounts that his life has been intertwined with the sea since his teenage years, and he has been a fisherman until now, nearing fifty. He has bought national flags countless times to hang in the highest and most prominent position on his fishing boat. Because of the harsh sun and wind of the sea, the flags quickly fade and tear, so he always has to buy new ones to replace the old ones. This is his greatest asset, nothing is more precious than it. Without the flag, he feels his fishing boat is bare, unsightly, and like a house without a roof. Mr. Sam is one of many fishermen in Lam Dong province in particular, and the whole country in general, who share this sentiment in their fishing profession. Despite facing danger, they are determined to protect their boats, the national flag, and their fishing grounds.
Besides buying flags to hang themselves, many fishermen also receive flags from border guard stations during holidays, festivals, or related events. This is a meaningful gift for fishermen, especially those engaged in offshore fishing; it helps to motivate and encourage them to actively venture out to sea and stay at sea, as well as affirming that the mainland always looks towards the homeland's seas and islands, and towards the resilient fishermen who persevere in staying at sea and in the fishing grounds.
Fisherman Nguyen Van Thinh from Phu Thuy said while docking his fishing boat at Phu Hai Port after many days at sea: “Occasionally, the border guard station gives me a flag. Every time I go out to sea to fish with the national flag, I feel my national pride is boosted. Because the red flag with a yellow star is a sacred symbol of the Fatherland, representing the fighting spirit and determination to win of the nation.” The Thanh Hai Border Guard Station alone distributes an average of 100 flags to fishermen each year, in two ways: delivering them directly to fishing boats and distributing them during related events. While the flag distribution is mainly for offshore fishermen, many inshore fishermen also wish to receive flags to express their patriotism. Mr. Tran Van Thanh, head of Ward 3 in Phu Hai, said that some fishermen have suggested to us that if the border guard station is going to give flags to fishermen, they should also give them to those fishing near the shore. For every fisherman, the flag is a sacred symbol of their homeland and country, a source of pride, reminding them that each trip to sea, in addition to earning a living, also contributes to protecting the sovereignty of the nation's seas and islands.
Major Tran Duong Khanh, Political Officer of Thanh Hai Border Guard Station, said: "Presenting the national flag to fishermen is a regular activity of the unit. Along with patrolling, monitoring, and having fishermen sign commitments, it contributes to raising the self-awareness of the people in protecting marine resources, as well as making fishermen confident and proud of their traditional occupation of the locality and the country. While venturing out to sea, they are also actively participating in protecting the sovereignty and security of the Fatherland. Each flag, each fishing boat of the fishermen is a living landmark affirming the sovereignty of the Fatherland."
The sea and islands are an integral part of our sacred territory and a source of livelihood for fishermen. The presence of ships flying the national flag has further strengthened our resolve, confidence, and determination to safeguard the sovereignty of our homeland's seas and islands.
