Mainoo has not been a regular starter for MU this season. |
Ruben Amorim chose to confront the wave of criticism engulfing Old Trafford head-on. Ahead of the Premier League match against Bournemouth on the morning of December 16th, he admitted that Manchester United's performance had been unsatisfactory and that he bore the greatest responsibility for the current results.
In recent days, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, and Nicky Butt have all spoken out about Kobbie Mainoo not being given enough opportunities. The 20-year-old midfielder has yet to start a Premier League game this season and is likely to look for another loan move when the January transfer window opens. Napoli is considered a preferred destination, just like last summer.
Amorim believes the harsh criticism from former players stems from the standards of winning they once shared at Manchester United. In the context of the team's struggles, such comparisons become even more intense. He insists he accepts all criticism because he understands that Man United should have earned more points.
According to Amorim, the core problem wasn't with any one individual, but with the team's overall results. He emphasized: "The only problem is not winning." And from that, Amorim made his most striking statement: "If I'm winning, I can ride a horse to the stadium, play with two defenders, and everything will be fine." For him, at Sporting Lisbon, all controversies ceased to exist simply because the team consistently won.
Regarding Mainoo, Amorim affirmed that the young player had been given opportunities but had not taken full advantage of them. He did not forbid Mainoo from leaving and was willing to engage in dialogue if the midfielder wanted to have a frank conversation. However, Amorim emphasized that the top priority was always the team and the goal of winning.
Amorim also clarified the tactical aspect. Manchester United currently plays with two central midfielders, which puts Mainoo at a disadvantage. According to him, if the formation switched to three midfielders, Mainoo's chances of playing might be different.
Not only Mainoo, Amorim also gave a frank assessment of other young players. Toby Collyer was rarely used at West Brom, Harry Amass struggled in the Championship, and Chido Obi was not a regular choice in the U21 team. Amorim emphasized that all these players had been given opportunities during a period when he was under immense pressure and constantly facing calls for his dismissal.
Amorim's message was clear: academy tradition is a source of pride for Manchester United, but it's not a guarantee of a starting place. At Old Trafford, winning remains the ultimate standard.
