The Indian Health Ministry has reported two new cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, detected in the cities of Chennai and Salem in Tamil Nadu state.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in New Delhi, the Indian Ministry of Health on January 6 recorded two more cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection in the southernmost state of Tamil Nadu, bringing the total number of HMPV infections nationwide to five.
The Indian health ministry announced two new cases in the cities of Chennai and Salem in Tamil Nadu, adding: “ The government is reassured that HMPV is generally self-limiting and manageable. The Tamil Nadu government remains vigilant for influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory illness.”
Earlier the same day, India also recorded two cases of young children (a 3-month-old girl and an 8-month-old boy) infected with the HMPV virus in Bengaluru (Karnataka state), along with another case of a 2-month-old baby in Ahmedabad (Gujarat state).
These are the first cases of HMPV infection in India after reports of a recent outbreak in China.
The Indian health ministry said the young patients and their families in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad had no recent travel history, ruling out exposure from other regions or countries. The agency is monitoring the situation through all available surveillance channels.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (IMCR) will continue to monitor the spread of HMPV throughout the year.
Governments in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi have issued guidelines – similar to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic – to ensure preparedness to deal with potential health challenges related to HMPV.
HMPV, first identified in 2001, is a respiratory infection that causes flu-like symptoms.
The virus can affect people of all ages, but children under 5, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.
