Indian media reported that up to 40 workers were on the bridge, while the country's police force confirmed that there were only 28 workers.

The incident has killed at least 17 people. The cause of the accident is still unknown and authorities are trying to find the victims.

Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced compensation of 1 million Rupees (equivalent to 287.5 million VND) for each death and 200,000 Rupees for each injured person.

Standing at 104 metres high, the bridge will span the Kurung River between the Bairabi and Sairang railway stations. Once completed, the project will connect the city of Aizawl to India’s national rail network.
