Israel on Sunday received the remains of a dead hostage held in the Gaza Strip, which the militant group Hamas said were those of an Israeli soldier killed in the area more than a decade ago.

The remains were returned to Israeli forces in the Palestinian territories by the Red Cross, according to a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. The identity of the person has not yet been officially confirmed.
However, Hamas' armed wing said it had returned the body of Hadar Goldin, an Israeli army officer killed in an ambush in Gaza in 2014.
Since a ceasefire took effect on October 10 in a war that has lasted until 2023, Hamas has released 20 hostages alive as part of a process to end the conflict proposed by US President Donald Trump. In return, Israel has freed nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
The deal also includes the return of the remains of 28 dead hostages held in Gaza in exchange for the remains of 360 Palestinian militants held by Israel.
By Sunday, Israel had received the bodies of 23 hostages and handed over the remains of 300 Palestinians, although not all had been identified, according to Gaza health authorities.
Hamas militants took 251 hostages in an attack on Israel in October 2023. Four other hostages were already being held in Gaza before that time.
