Is eating corn in the morning good for you?

VTC NewsVTC News26/05/2024

According to Dr. Tu Ngu, Secretary General of the Vietnam Nutrition Association, many people use corn for breakfast, which is perfectly acceptable, but it shouldn't become a habit day after day, month after month.

Corn was formerly a popular staple food in Vietnam, second only to rice. During times of economic hardship, corn was widely used in family meals, prepared in many ways such as boiled corn, steamed corn, sticky rice with corn, or ground into flour for cakes. In some places, there was even a dish called "men men" made from corn.

Corn is still classified as a staple food, but as the economy develops, it is no longer used as a substitute for rice in daily meals as before; instead, many people use corn as a regular food item.

Specifically, in stews or hot pot dishes, many families still add corn to make the broth sweeter and more nutritious. Corn can also be used to stir-fry meat or make soup.

According to the Vietnamese food composition table, 100 grams of edible corn contains 196 kcal; 4.1g protein; 2.3g lipids; 39.6g carbohydrates; 1.7g sugar and various other vitamins and minerals.

Compared to 100 grams of milled white rice, corn has fewer calories (white rice has 344 kcal/100 grams) and less carbohydrates. However, corn contains more fat and sugar.

Because corn has fewer calories than rice, many people eat it for breakfast to lose weight. However, it's important to note that those who eat boiled corn usually don't combine it with other foods like vegetables, meat, fish, or eggs for breakfast. Conversely, when eating rice cooked from white rice, it's necessary to include other food groups.

From both a scientific and practical nutritional standpoint, eating white rice with other food for breakfast is better than eating just corn for breakfast. However, due to personal preference, we can certainly vary our meals and occasionally have corn for breakfast; it's still good because corn contains a certain amount of sugar, fat, and protein, albeit not in large quantities.

Experts note that people shouldn't assume that they should only eat boiled corn in the morning. We can prepare many other dishes from corn that are also very reasonable and nutritious, such as corn soup, chicken soup, and vegetable soup, which are good for digestion and provide all the necessary nutrients.

You can also cook minced meat soup with baby corn and vegetables, or pork rib soup with corn and vegetables for breakfast. This way, we don't need to eat rice but still get carbohydrates, and especially many other essential nutrients.
