In that silent journey, there are very special people, with Rh- blood type (a rare blood type that accounts for less than 0.1% of the population in Vietnam). They are always ready to donate precious drops of blood to patients in emergency situations.
One day in May 2025, when receiving an emergency call informing that an elderly patient was in critical condition and needed an urgent blood transfusion to save her life, young teacher Luong Le Duyen Nhi (teacher at Hoa Anh Dao Kindergarten, Ea Wer commune) hurriedly traveled more than 30 km to Buon Ma Thuot University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital to donate blood. "At that time, I just thought I had to go quickly, the patient really needed my blood," Nhi recalled. It was one of the emotional blood donations, also part of her quiet but meaningful journey - a person with the rare blood type AB Rh-.
Seemingly small drops of blood contain a whole journey of sharing full of humanity. (In the photo: Volunteers in the province participating in donating blood during Humanitarian Month 2025). |
Although she herself has a rare blood type, it was not until 2016, when she was pregnant with her first child, that Nhi found out during a general prenatal check-up that she had a rare blood type. The whole family was in a state of confusion and anxiety. The days leading up to the birth were a stressful time. The family had to ask relatives, family members, and friends to do blood tests, hoping to find someone suitable in case they needed an emergency blood transfusion during the birth, but the results were that almost no one was a match.
Fortunately, the cesarean section went smoothly and no blood transfusion was needed, but that memory was deeply imprinted in her mind – as a lesson about the fragility of life and the pricelessness of rare blood drops. Therefore, whenever she knows of a patient in need of a rare blood transfusion, Nhi is always ready to go, day or night. “Now that I am young and healthy, I will give. My greatest wish is to always stay in good health so that I can be ready to give my blood without hesitation,” Nhi expressed.
Ms. Luong Le Duyen Nhi and Mr. Duong Xuan Thong are typical individuals in the voluntary blood donation movement in 2025, honored and received certificates of merit from the Provincial People's Committee. |
Also having a rare blood type, Mr. Duong Xuan Thong (Head of Representative Office of Khanh Hoa Lottery Company Limited, representative office in Dak Lak ) is one of the typical faces in the community of people with Rh- blood type, actively participating in blood donation for the community. He accidentally discovered his special blood type after donating blood for the first time in 2000. Like Ms. Nhi, he was confused and worried, then decided to join voluntary blood donation clubs to be ready to support when needed. For him, donating a part of his blood is to contribute to giving hope to others. “Rh- blood type is a rare blood type in Vietnam, so the Rh- blood community needs to keep in touch and support each other. Not only in blood donation, but also in life, sharing, encouraging each other, and spreading the humane value of donating blood to save lives,” Mr. Thong shared.
The story of the donor and the recipient in the journey of rare blood drops is a touching piece of humanity. “A drop of blood given, a life saved” – that is not only a slogan, but also a noble gesture of kind hearts, quietly lighting up life from their own blood.
