Manager Ruben Amorim has decided to leave goalkeeper Andre Onana out of the squad for Sunday's trip to Newcastle. While the rest of the United squad travelled to Tyneside, Onana remained in Manchester.
The Portuguese tactician has repeatedly defended Onana but after two unforgivable errors in the Europa League draw with Lyon last week, his patience has run out. In addition, British media believe that many United players have expressed frustration with the Cameroon goalkeeper, demanding that he be dropped from the squad.
Onana has played 69 full Premier League games since moving from Inter in the summer of 2023. This will be the first time he has been sidelined through injury.
According to statistics, Onana has made 9 mistakes leading to goals in all competitions during his time at MU. No goalkeeper currently playing in England has made more mistakes than Onana. In the Premier League this season alone, the 29-year-old goalkeeper has also made 3 mistakes that have led to goals conceded by MU. He is proving that Nemanja Matic's statement that "Onana is one of the worst goalkeepers in MU history" is completely grounded.
Next summer, Amorim is likely to have a revolution in the goalkeeper position.
Second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who is expected to start against Newcastle, is likely to be sold in the summer, while third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton is also out of contract. To eliminate the risk, a top-class goalkeeper is expected to be brought in to replace Onana, who is always a potential threat to United.
