Attending the 12th ASEAN Para Games flag raising ceremony were Mr. Hun Many, President of the Union of Cambodian Youth Federation (UYFC) and Vice President of the Cambodian National Paralympic Committee (NPCC); Mr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism and Permanent Vice President of the 12th ASEAN Para Games Organizing Committee of Cambodia (CAMAPGOC); Mr. Yi Veasna, Deputy Secretary General of CAMAPGOC and Secretary General of NPCC, along with officials and representatives of sports delegations of countries attending this event. The Vietnamese Paralympic Sports Delegation led by Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh - Deputy Director General of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, along with representatives of athletes of various sports attended the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, NPCC Vice President Hun Many warmly welcomed sports delegations from 11 Southeast Asian countries to attend the sports festival for athletes with disabilities hosted by Cambodia for the first time.
The ASEAN Para Games flag-raising ceremony represents the spirit of friendship and solidarity among the countries in the region. In addition to highlighting the presence of the countries and welcoming the athletes, the flag-raising ceremony is also a word of encouragement for the athletes participating in the 12th ASEAN Para Games, a meaningful playground for disabled athletes, people full of determination, overcoming themselves in life, practicing sports and striving to bring glory to the country.
Speaking to VNA reporters, NPCC Secretary General Yi Veasna said that the host country Cambodia has carefully prepared for the 12th ASEAN Para Games, from the opening and closing ceremonies, competition venues to the reception of sports delegations from other countries, ensuring the best conditions for athletes. Through the flag-raising ceremony, witnessing the national flags of the countries flying in the international arena, Mr. Yi Veasna expressed his hope that the athletes will be motivated and have the best competitive spirit in this congress.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh - Head of the Vietnam Disabled Sports Delegation expressed his emotion and honor when representing the Vietnam Disabled Sports Delegation to attend the flag-raising ceremony. The Vietnam Sports Delegation attended the Games with 159 members, including 16 delegation officials, 21 coaches and 122 athletes (including 2 guide athletes). The Vietnamese athletes competed in 8 out of 13 sports of the Games, including: athletics, swimming, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, chess, judo and boccia. The goal of the Vietnam Disabled Sports Delegation in this Games is to strive to win 50-55 gold medals and be in the top 4 countries in the medal tally, equivalent to the achievement of the 11th ASEAN Para Games held last year in Solo (Indonesia).
According to Head of Delegation Nguyen Hong Minh, the 12th ASEAN Para Games is an international sporting event with a strong humanitarian character and extremely important significance, aiming to promote good relations, solidarity, friendship and mutual understanding among ASEAN countries. The Games gather many of the region's leading disabled athletes, so the level of competition is expected to be very fierce. Therefore, this will be a great opportunity for Vietnamese disabled athletes to demonstrate their extraordinary will and determination, overcome all difficulties and obstacles from their own disabilities to confidently rise up, affirm their desire to win, integrate and contribute.
Ahead of the opening of the 12th ASEAN Para Games, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and senior Cambodian leaders called on the people of the country to attend and cheer on events and activities within the framework of the games, adding more energy and strength to the competing athletes.
