Football Federation Australia (FA) has celebrated Australia being awarded the right to host the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
On May 16, the AFC Executive Committee officially approved the recommendation of the AFC Women's Football Committee for Australia to host the 2026 tournament.
Matches at the 12-team 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup will be played across New South Wales (NSW), Queensland and Western Australia (WA) - all of which have hosted matches at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, including the semi-finals and final at Stadium Australia in Sydney, NSW.
Australia last hosted the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2006, when the Matildas reached the final for the first time but lost to China on penalties.
Australia won the tournament for the first time in 2010 and reached the finals in 2014 and 2018, but were defeated by Japan both times.
The 2023 Women's World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand has broken records for the number of people attending the tournament.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described it as the best Women's World Cup ever.
