In recent years, the movement to convert crop and livestock structure in My Phuoc commune, My Tu district ( Soc Trang province) has developed strongly, helping people escape poverty and stabilize their lives.
In the poverty alleviation and enrichment models in My Phuoc commune, many households have built models of raising soft-shell turtles for meat and soft-shell turtles for breeding, bringing high economic efficiency.
Soft-shelled turtles are pets and specialties that help many farming households in My Phuoc commune, My Tu district, Soc Trang province increase their income significantly and become well-off.
Born and raised in a farming family, when they first got married, Le Minh Nhut and his wife in Phuoc Tho B hamlet, My Phuoc commune only had 2 hectares of rice fields.
Then 3 children were born one after another, making family life even more difficult. Mr. Nhut and his wife had to work for hire to earn extra income to cover their daily expenses.
In early 2020, Mr. Nhut's family was introduced by the Women's Union of the commune to participate in the Savings and Loan Group of Phuoc Tho B hamlet, My Phuoc commune.
Accordingly, he boldly presented his need to borrow capital to implement a model of raising soft-shell turtles for meat and was considered by the district's Social Policy Bank for a loan of 40 million VND. Together with the capital accumulated over many years of saving, Mr. Nhut's family invested in buying soft-shell turtle breeds and started renovating the soft-shell turtle pond.
At first, because he didn't have much experience raising and caring for turtles, his family encountered many difficulties.
But with the will to rise up, the spirit of hard work, both raising soft-shell turtles and learning through newspapers, radio, internet and being guided and trained in soft-shell turtle raising techniques by the professional industry, Mr. Nhut's soft-shell turtle raising model has brought high economic efficiency.
Talking to us, Mr. Le Minh Nhut said that when he first invested in raising them, he only had one pond with 3,000 soft-shell turtles. Now, his family has expanded to two more ponds with over 5,000 soft-shell turtles.
Besides, from the practical experience of raising soft-shell turtles accumulated over time, he also researched and self-cultivated soft-shell turtles to supply to households in need of raising them in and outside the locality.
At the same time, he is willing to share his experience in raising specialty animals with people around him to develop the economy together.
Thanks to diligence and hard work, each year after deducting expenses, the average profit is over 200 million VND/year from the model of raising soft-shell turtles for breeding and raising soft-shell turtles for sale.

Mr. Le Minh Nhut in Phuoc Tho B hamlet, My Phuoc commune excitedly shared: “Previously, due to lack of investment capital, my family had difficulty doing anything, the family economy was unstable. Thanks to being able to borrow capital from the Social Policy Bank, the procedures were simple, and the staff guided us enthusiastically in completing the loan application, my family was very happy and excited to receive timely loan support.
With capital, my husband and I have invested in developing a large-scale turtle farming model. Currently, my family has bought 3 more hectares of rice fields and expanded 2 more ponds to raise turtles.
Thanks to that, my family's economy is much better than before, we can build a nice house and have the conditions to take care of our children's education."
Thanks to his own efforts, through the help of the Commune Women's Union, local authorities, professional sectors and especially the timely capital support from the Bank for Social Policies, Le Minh Nhut's family has a stable life like today.
Since then, his family has been very conscious of saving to pay interest and depositing monthly savings to the district Social Policy Bank. It can be seen that raising soft-shell turtles brings high economic efficiency, low risk, and relatively stable output, so Mr. Nhut's soft-shell turtle meat farming model has been visited and learned by many households in and outside the commune.
