To stay fit in middle age, Mr Sunak often fasts intermittently, gives up soft drinks and exercises regularly.

At the end of May, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and more than 100 other athletes participated in the marathon held in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. At the age of 43, he completed the 10 km distance in 47 minutes and 41 seconds. This was not even his best achievement. Before that, Mr. Sunak was known as the youngest Prime Minister of the UK in 200 years. In middle age, he still maintains a healthy appearance and a strong body.

The key to his good health is a healthy diet, limiting carbonated drinks and actively exercising at home.

Intermittent fasting

According to sources close to the Prime Minister, Sunak fasts once or twice a week. This is a form of intermittent fasting - a popular diet method that has been adopted by many people in recent years. The term describes a cyclical diet and fasting, allowing the body enough time to fully consume food, while strictly limiting the amount of calories consumed.

There are two methods of intermittent fasting: time-restricted eating (eating for 6-8 hours and fasting for the remaining 16-18 hours) or continuous fasting for 16 to 24 hours, twice a week.

Unlike popular diet trends that are hyped on social media, intermittent fasting is supported by many experts and has clear research on its benefits. This regimen is recommended by some doctors for people with type 2 diabetes, or those who need to lose weight.

Prime Minister Sunak often eats chicken broth for dinner and limits snacking during the day. Previously, a friend of his also revealed to the Sunday Times : "He doesn't eat too much, he can even live all day on just an apple and a few cashews."

Quit soda addiction

Prime Minister Sunak admitted he was a soft drink addict in an interview in 2019. The habit caused cavities and he had to limit himself to one can of Coke a week.

According to experts, each can of soft drink that Mr. Sunak likes contains about 139 calories, along with 35g of sugar. This amount of sugar is equivalent to 22 packets of sugar for coffee. Therefore, drinking soft drinks regularly for a long time will increase the insulin content in the body, causing weight gain and obesity. People who are overweight or obese are at high risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Cutting out soft drinks from your diet will help you lose weight and prevent chronic non-communicable diseases.

Indoor exercise

Unlike many people, Mr Sunak prefers indoor forms of exercise.

“I check my phone, scan the news, then depending on my energy levels, I’ll hit the treadmill, cycle, or take a fitness class,” he shares.

The British Prime Minister tries to complete at least one HIIT workout and one run a week. According to experts, regular running strengthens the heart, increases aerobic capacity, and helps keep blood pressure and cholesterol at healthy levels. It also improves the immune system and increases muscle strength.

In addition, running stimulates muscle fibers, increases endurance and strength. Marathon training also causes fatigue, so people will sleep better because the body needs time to recover.
