(BL-NQ) A newly published report shows that Vietnam has the technical potential for offshore wind power of up to 1,068GW, significantly higher than previous estimates.

1,068GW is an extremely large amount of energy, enough to power hundreds of millions of households, or even a country.

The coastal area alone (up to 6 nautical miles, equivalent to 11.1km) of the two provinces of Bac Lieu and Ca Mau accounts for nearly 30% of the total technical potential of this region nationwide, equivalent to about 16GW.

This information is provided in the Report “Detailed assessment of wind resource potential in coastal areas (up to 6 nautical miles) and offshore areas in Vietnam”. The report was conducted by the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, with the support of the United Nations Development Program in Vietnam and the Norwegian Embassy in Vietnam.

According to the report, Vietnam's total offshore wind power technical potential of 1,068GW is much higher than the figure of 599GW in the World Bank's "Offshore Wind Roadmap" report published in 2021. This potential is mainly distributed in the southern sea (about 894GW), while the northern sea has a potential of about 174GW.

For the coastal area (from the shore to 6 nautical miles), the total estimated technical capacity is 57.8GW. Of which, the Bac Lieu - Ca Mau area emerges as the leader with about 16GW, accounting for nearly 30% of the total coastal potential of the country, thanks to stable wind speed.
