Concerns about "anti-failure" graduation for continuing education students

The education sector is reviewing and evaluating the quality of continuing education regularly to find a way to improve the rate of students passing high school graduation exams in 2025. However, according to the reality of continuing education institutions, this is not an easy task.

The Center for VocationalEducation and Continuing Education (VET) of Ea Kar district currently has 122 grade 12 students. To prepare for the 2025 High School Graduation Exam (abbreviated as the Exam), at the end of March, the Center organized a graduation mock exam for grade 12 students, of which 60 students were at risk of failing.

Mr. Le Nguyen Truong, Director of the Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center of Ea Kar district, said that since mid-April 2025, the Center has organized free review sessions and encouraged 100% of students to take the exam; at the same time, teachers have been allowed to register voluntarily to ensure the best results. However, most of the students are in special circumstances, have limited access to knowledge, and many are still negligent in their studies, so it is difficult to ensure the graduation rate in 2025.

The Center for Continuing Education and Vocational Training in Krong Nang District has 193 12th graders. The Center has proactively informed students about the new points of the exam; guided students to register for the exam; organized orientation for students to choose exam subjects from the beginning of the school year (results were 100% of students chose 4 subjects: Math, Literature, History, Geography); organized review for students in parallel with the main curriculum... However, according to forecasts, the Center has about 40 students at risk of "failing" graduation. Mr. Nong Duc Nam, Director of the Center for Continuing Education and Vocational Training in Krong Nang District, said that the above forecast was based on the results of the final exam of the first semester and the mid-second semester of the 2024-2025 school year. The test scores in the 2024-2025 school year are also lower than in previous years. This is a concern for improving the quality of education through the upcoming graduation exam.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Dak Lak College has 1,732 students studying both vocational training and high school in the GDTX program; of which 332 students are studying high school in the GDTX program. According to Vice Principal of Dak Lak College Truong Thi Dung, the school is having difficulty organizing review sessions for students because according to Circular 29 on extra teaching and learning, the review sessions are free of charge and do not collect money from parents. Meanwhile, the school is not allowed to pay teachers for exam review (it cannot be paid because the school is not assigned to teach GDTX). Therefore, the school has notified parents to proactively let students review at centers outside the school.

In reality, learning is a process, reviewing and consolidating knowledge according to functions and tasks will help educational institutions improve quality throughout the training process for many generations of students. Director of the Center for Continuing Education and Vocational Training of Krong Pac district Nguyen Dinh Huy shared that the unit has organized an assessment of the curriculum and student characteristics to find appropriate solutions to improve quality; teachers proactively research exam questions and exam methods; hold professional group meetings, develop review outlines... Teachers focus on guiding students on how to self-study at home, assigning assignments via social networking applications for students to research and practice questions; ready to support students indirectly via social networks, directly at school to accompany them before the upcoming important graduation exam.

According to statistics from the Department of Education and Training, the high school graduation rate in the continuing education system in 2022 is 88.55%; in 2023 it is 85.68%; in 2024 it is 92.06%.

At the conference of leaders of vocational education and continuing education institutions for the 2024-2025 school year organized by the Department of Education and Training (DoET) in mid-April, the education sector had an overall assessment of high school education activities according to the continuing education program. The formal teaching must ensure the full amount of knowledge of the curriculum; then comes the subjects that need to be reviewed.

According to the 2025 High School Graduation Exam Regulations, continuing education students will take the same exam questions and the same "formula" for graduation as high school students. Therefore, maintaining and improving the graduation rate will be very difficult. Many delegates attending the conference also expressed concern about the number of students studying both general education and vocational training at Dak Lak College, because the review process needs to be linked to the main curriculum to complement each other to achieve the highest educational efficiency. Educational institutions must be responsible for training test-taking skills and reviewing knowledge for students so that they can confidently enter the exam.

According to Director of the Department of Education and Training Le Thi Thanh Xuan, continuing education institutions must organize mock exams for students to have a basis for evaluating and classifying students at risk of "failing" graduation, from which there will be ways to support review in the spirit of individualization to effectively "prevent" graduation failure.

From April 21 to 5:00 p.m. on April 28 is the time for candidates nationwide to register for the 2025 high school graduation exam. Accordingly, candidates studying in grade 12 in the 2024-2025 school year use the system login accounts provided by the Departments of Education and Training and high schools to register for the exam online on the Ministry of Education and Training's system at: http://thisinh.thitotnghiepthpt.edu.vn.

Candidates can register for the exam according to the regulations of the Department of Education and Training or register online by logging into the National Public Service Portal.

The Ministry of Education and Training will announce the list of candidates who are not eligible to take the exam no later than June 7, 2025.

The 2025 high school graduation exam will take place on June 26 and 27; it is expected that there will be more than 1.1 million candidates nationwide, an increase of about 40,000 candidates compared to 2024. The exam results are expected to be announced on July 16.

According to the Department of Education and Training, Dak Lak province will have about 22,000 candidates registering for the high school graduation exam in 2025.
