Southeast Asia still has no medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics

According to statistics from the official Olympic website, as of 10:00 a.m. on August 1 (Vietnam time), a total of 41 sports delegations have won medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Among them, Asian powers such as China, South Korea, and Japan competed very successfully. China is temporarily leading the Olympics with 9 gold medals, 7 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals.

But so far there have been no medals from Southeast Asian countries. Southeast Asian sports have been disappointing in the first days of competition at the Olympics.

According to Thai media, the person most likely to bring home the first medal for the country is badminton player Kunlavut Vitidsarn. This 23-year-old is the world champion in the men's singles and he also played impressively to reach the round of 16 at the Paris Olympics.

At the Paris Olympics, Thailand is the Southeast Asian country with the most athletes participating with 51 people, aiming to win 6 gold medals. Next is Indonesia (29 athletes), Malaysia (26), Singapore (23), Philippines (22), Vietnam (16)...

Other countries such as Timor-Leste, Laos, Brunei Darussalam and Cambodia will only have a maximum of four athletes participating in the 2024 Olympics. Meanwhile, Myanmar - the Southeast Asian country with the most Olympic appearances - with 18 times, only has two athletes coming to this year's prestigious event.

Nearly 1,000 South Koreans hospitalized due to heat

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KDCA) said 500 emergency rooms nationwide reported 995 patients with heat-related illnesses from May 20, when the monitoring system began, through July 28. The figure included four deaths, up 3.4 percent from 962 in 2023.

This year, 29.5% of patients with heat-related illnesses were 65 years of age or older, and 78.7% were men. Medical conditions caused by extreme heat conditions mainly occurred outdoors (82%) such as in the workplace (29.3%) and in fields (18.1%).

Associated illnesses include heatstroke, which causes the central nervous system, which regulates body temperature, to lose control due to overheating, as well as heat exhaustion, which causes muscle cramps due to a lack of salt, potassium, and magnesium in the body due to excessive sweating, and eventually heat stroke or fainting due to lack of blood flow to the brain.

Many famous MCs refused to host the 2025 Oscars

According to People, Jimmy Kimmel has hosted the Oscars four times, but this time, he decided to decline. Meanwhile, John Mulaney - who has never hosted the Oscars before - also refused. According to Deadline, the 41-year-old star even waited for Kimmel to decline the hosting role so that he could... decline as well.

As for Jimmy Kimmel, the famous MC once affirmed that he would never host this film awards ceremony again. After the end of the 2024 awards ceremony, Jimmy said: "I don't think I'll do it again. I know how much effort it takes to do the awards ceremony and I don't want to have to do it again."

Earlier in January, Kevin Hart also declared that he would never host an awards show again: "There's no chance of the Oscars or the Golden Globes or anywhere else. Those places are no longer friendly environments for humor."

Although the Academy has not yet found a host, it has announced that the 97th Oscar Awards will take place on March 2, 2025.

New discovery: Trees also 'hold their breath' because of forest fire smoke

A team of atmospheric and chemical scientists at Colorado State University (USA) has studied air quality, ecological impacts of wildfire smoke and other pollutants.

They studied how plants emit volatile compounds — chemicals that make forests smell like forests but also affect air quality.

The research began quite by accident when wildfire smoke filled the team's research site in Colorado, allowing them to observe in real time how leaves reacted to the smoke, according to LiveScience.

Fall 2020 was a bad wildfire season in the western United States, and thick smoke blanketed a research team's field site in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

On the first morning of heavy smoke, the team conducted a routine test to measure photosynthesis in ponderosa pine leaves. They were surprised to find that the trees' spiracles were completely closed and photosynthesis was almost zero.
