According to The Times, Barca are accused of breaching UEFA's financial rules for the second year in a row, putting them at risk of receiving a hefty fine.
UEFA has not commented on the decisions of the Club Financial Control Board (CFCB), an independent body, but said a statement would be made in the coming weeks. UEFA always publishes details of clubs that breach FFP regulations, and Chelsea, Aston Villa and Barca are among those in trouble. However, Chelsea and Aston Villa are first-time offenders and face only light penalties.
UEFA’s solution to financial irregularities is usually to negotiate a fine. But Barca have broken the rules for the second year in a row, so a severe punishment is needed. FCFB regulations explain that clubs who are repeat offenders in the second year can have their Champions League squads restricted and even points deducted for the entire season. The ultimate goal of UEFA’s new financial regulations is to gradually reduce the losses of financially unbalanced clubs over a three-year period.
In October 2024, Barca lost an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a $570,000 fine for understating profits. CAS said the fine was light, and warned that a second violation would result in a more severe sanction.
